How to fix Apple iPhone XR with notifications that play in silent mode

There are certain instances when you feel the need to place your phone in silent mode like when you’re at work and don’t want to get disturbed or when doing something very important that you don’t want to get distracted from unwanted phone calls and message alerts. All it takes to make this happen is to turn off notifications or put your phone in silent mode. Tackled in this post is an unusual problem on the iPhone XR notifications that play even when the phone is in silent mode.

Such problem is more likely attributed to minor system glitches, hence can be resolved by certain workarounds. And to give you some input, I’ve lined up some applicable procedures and potential solutions you can try on. If you’re one of those experiencing the same issue on iPhone XR, try these solutions to eliminate software-related factors that might have triggered your iPhone XR notifications to play in silent mode.

Before we move on to our troubleshooting, if you happen to find this post while looking for a solution to a different problem, then visit our iPhone XR Help Guides page for we have already addressed some of the most common issues with this device. We may have already published articles that could help you fix your problem. Find issues that are similar to yours and feel free to use our solutions.

First solution: Toggle the silent/ring button then restart your iPhone XR.

The button at the upper-left corner of your iPhone is the ringer button. Silent mode is indicated by the switch in red position. If it is not on the red position, then your phone is currently set to Ring mode and therefore sounds should play for incoming calls, message alerts and other notifications. To silent these alerts, simply flip the switch downwards to enable silent mode. After putting your phone into Silent mode, perform either a soft reset or force restart on your device. This should help dump junk files including corrupt data that might have caused conflicts to your phone’s audio system.

Here’s how a soft reset is done on your iPhone XR:

  1. Press and hold the Power/Side button and either of the Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release both buttons once you see the Power to Off command on your screen.
  3. Drag the Power to Off slider to the right to turn off your phone.
  4. Wait for about 30 seconds then press and hold the Power/Side button to turn on your phone again.

Alternatively, you can force restart your iPhone XR to simultaneously end all suspended apps along with any corrupted data that might have ruined the phone’s sound and notification functions. Here’s how:

  1. Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.
  2. Press and release the Volume Down button quickly.
  3. Finally, press and hold the Power/Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Wait for the reboot process to complete and then check if your phone’s notification function goes back to normal.

Second solution: Check and manage Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone XR.

Incorrect configurations particularly on your phone’s Do Not Disturb feature can also cause notifications to play even when in silent mode. To make sure that everything has been configured correctly, check and manage your iPhone XR’s DND settings and apply the necessary changes. Here’s how to get there:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  3. To enable Do Not Disturb feature completely, simply toggle the switch to turn it on. Notifications for incoming calls, messages and some apps are now muted.

If you don’t want all alert sounds to be muted, then you can set some exceptions to your DND settings. Just follow the onscreen instructions to manage DND exceptions.

To make sure that all DND settings take effect and work as intended, set your date and time to automatic. Date and time are key factors for DND feature to work properly on your phone so make sure they’re correct. If necessary, change and set your date and time settings to automatic so that your phone will use date and time information based on your current time zone and location.

Third solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

An incorrect or invalid settings customization may likewise affect your phone’s notification system and could possibly the main reason why your iPhone notifications still play in silent mode. In this case, removing those erratic settings may fix the issue. Performing a reset on all settings will wipe out all customized settings including faulty update overrides that may have directly or indirectly caused the notification problem. After the reset  all settings process, your phone will revert to its default configuration and thus the original settings and values are restored. Should you wish to give this a try, then you may refer to these steps:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Tap the Reset All Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode once prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm all settings reset.

Once the reset process is done, your phone will restart automatically. After it reboots, check and make sure that the Silent mode or DND mode is activated. Then try to see if your iPhone XR notifications still play or not anymore.

Fourth solution: Check and install latest iOS version.

System errors inflicted by corrupt files and stubborn bugs might have been causing audio system conflicts that eventually resulted in your phone’s notifications to still play even when in silent mode. If this is the case, then checking and installing the latest version of iOS may be able to resolve the problem. Software updates usually provide necessary patches to fix malwares and software issues that are attributed to stubborn bugs. If your iPhone can access the Internet and has sufficient battery life and ample storage space, then you can check for and download software updates wirelessly through these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, access Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Select Software Update

A system notification will prompt if there’s an available update for your phone. Just read the update information and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the download and installation process. After installing the update, reboot your iPhone XR to refresh its memory and system functions. Restarting is also a way to ensure all new system changes are properly implemented. After your phone reboots, switch your phone to silent mode or enable Do Not Disturb mode, if it isn’t already and then try to see if notifications still play or not.

Fifth solution: Perform a factory reset on your iPhone XR (factory reset).

If the notification still plays in silent mode after performing all the aforementioned procedures, then you might be dealing with a complex system error that needs a more advanced solution like a full system reset. Performing a factory reset or master reset will wipe out everything from your iPhone system including stubborn bugs and malwares that might have been causing some major system infractions particularly to your phone’s audio and notification functions. Should you wish to proceed, be sure to create a backup of all your important files to iCloud or iTunes, for safekeeping. And when everything is ready, just follow these steps to begin erasing your iPhone XR:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset.
  4. Tap the Erase all contents and settings option.
  5. Enter your passcode once prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm factory reset.

After the reset, your phone will reboot on its own. As soon as it boots up, continue the initial setup process to set up your device as new. Then mute your iPhone again to see if notifications still play in silent mode.

Are notifications still playing on your iPhone XR after a factory reset?

Most software-related issues are dealt with by a factory reset. But if that did not happen and your iPhone XR notifications still play notifications in silent mode, then you can proceed and carry out a more advanced solution through iTunes. Your next option would be an iOS restore either via recovery mode or DFU mode. These procedures need to be performed on a Mac or Windows computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. A more detailed walkthrough on how to carry out a recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore can be found on this site’s tutorials section. Just visit the iPhone XR troubleshooting page for more detailed instructions.

If all else failed and your iPhone XR still plays notification in silent mode, then you should now consider escalating the problem to Apple Support or visit the nearest Apple-authorized service center in your area so that an iPhone technician can inspect your device.
