Second solution: Manage DND feature.

When DND (Do Not Disturb) is enabled, notifications for incoming calls, text and email messages as well as app notification alerts are restricted or muted. In short, you won’t hear sound alerts or get any of these notifications on your device. An indication that DND is enabled on your iPhone is the crescent moon-like icon on the status bar. If you see this icon and you don’t receive any notifications on your iPhone XR, try to disable DND with these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to Do Not Disturb then toggle the switch to turn the feature off.

After turning DND off, try using another device to send a message or place a test call on your iPhone XR. If you still doesn’t hear notification alerts for calls and text, continue to troubleshoot your device.

Third solution: Manage notifications for individual apps.

Some iOS apps have individual options to set to turn notifications on or off. If you are having trouble receiving notifications for all apps, follow these steps to manage notification settings for your iPhone XR apps:

  1. Go back to Settings menu.
  2. Then tap to select the app you’re having problem with notifications.

If necessary, turn on alerts and banners to allow notifications to show up on the lock screen.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings

If you only have trouble receiving notifications after customizing some settings on your iPhone XR, then it’s likely attributed to invalid/incorrect settings configuration. If you still can recall what exactly has changed, then try to revert the changes back to the way they were previously configured, before the problem started. But if that’s not possible, you can just reset all settings on your iPhone XR. Doing so will erase all customized settings and then restores the default or original values. Any incorrect settings that may caused notifications to fail will likewise be eliminated.

Here’s how it’s done:

iPhone XR not getting notifications
  1. Open the Settings app from Home.
  2. Tap General.

  7. Then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

Reboot your iPhone after the reset to apply the new changes and clears errant cache from the apps and phone memory. This does not affect any saved data on the phone memory so you won’t lose critical data from doing so. Reconnect to the Internet and enable individual features on your phone to use them again.

Fifth solution: Factory reset/master reset.

If the prior reset failed to fix the problem and your iPhone XR notifications are still not working, then you’re probably having a more intricate system issue that requires more advanced methods. Among the last possible solutions you can try would be a factory reset or master reset. This reset is usually carried out when dealing with complex system errors that caused persistent symptoms that are software-related. Before you do so, back up all your important files to iCloud or iTunes because they will also be wiped out during the reset, along with your downloaded apps, saved contacts, messages and other files. Once you’re all set, follow these steps to factory reset/master reset your iPhone XR through settings:

iPhone XR not getting notifications
  1. Open the Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode, when asked.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

Wait for your iPhone to restart and then continue to set up your iPhone as new. Software-related issues should all be gone by then including notification problems. Otherwise, consider other options.

Other options

Installing the latest software update available for your iPhone XR can also be considered among other potential solutions for notification problems inflicted by random bugs and system errors. The same thing can be achieved when installing all pending app updates. If the notification problem only affects certain apps, then updating the errant applications can possibly solve the problem.

If updating apps or iOS won’t fix the problem either, then you may resort to performing system restore. You can start with a recovery mode restore to put your iPhone XR in recovery mode and then restore iOS using iTunes. If a recovery mode restore failed to fix the problem, then the last ditch solution you can try on would be a DFU mode restore. This is the deepest type of system restore done on an iPhone. Again you will need to use iTunes on a computer to get this done. For other options and suggestions, contact Apple Support or your device carrier instead.
