What causes no sound problem on your iPhone?

When your phone has no audio or sounds, your initial action would be to adjust the volume level and to make sure that the phone is not muted. If you aren’t doing this, then you better do it now. Once you’ve confirmed that the phone is not muted or silenced but still you are not hearing sound on your videos, alarms, ringtones for both call and text notifications, and other sound-enable apps, then that clearly denotes that something is wrong and that needs to be corrected. In most cases, no sound problem is attributed to the iPhone speaker that is damaged. But there is also a possibility that you’re just dealing with a random audio system glitch. Before rushing to a service center, I’ve mapped out some tweaks that you can use to rule out software-related factors that might have caused your iPhone XR to succumb to this no sound problem. Feel free to try these solutions whenever you’re all set to troubleshoot your device.

Solution #1: Toggle the mute switch and reboot your iPhone.

Considering that you already disabled the mute mode and yet there are still no sounds coming out from your phone, this audio mishap can be corrected by toggling the mute switch on the side of the phone. Then, reboot the phone afterwards to remove cached files and minor system glitch. Check out the steps below:

  1. With your phone facing up, flip the ringer switch upward.
  2. If it’s already positioned up or set to ring mode, flip the switch downward to switch the phone to mute.

If an orange line or bar is visible, this means that your phone is on a Mute/Silent mode.

While your iPhone is muted, perform a soft reset or reboot the system with these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either Volume up/down buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off commands appear, release both buttons.
  3. Then, drag the power off slider to the right.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds, and then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Once your phone has turned back on, toggle the Ringer switch to switch the phone back to ring mode.

Then try sending yourself a text message and see if you’re already able to hear a notification alert for incoming message. You can also play a music or video through a sound-enable app on your phone to see if the sound is back.

Solution #2: Disable the Do Not Disturb on your phone’s settings.

When Do Not Disturb has been enabled on your phone’s settings, this will basically result for the phone to make no sounds at all. Thus, turning the Do Not Disturb settings off will right away correct the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select Do Not Disturb option.
  3. Toggle the Do Not Disturb switch to turn it off.

A crescent moon will appear on the top right corner of your iPhone if the Do Not Disturb is enabled. Toggling the Do Not Disturb switch will cause this icon to disappear and possibly restores sound on your iPhone.

Solution #3: Disable Bluetooth connections to fix no sound problem.

When your phone is paired to another device, its sounds will also be transferred to the other device. Make it a habit to turn the Bluetooth off if not in used.  Doing so will also disconnect your phone from the paired device. Here is how it’s done:

  1. From the Settings, tap on the Bluetooth.
  2. If it is currently on, toggle the Bluetooth switch indicator to turn the feature off.

Once Bluetooth has already been disabled, try to play an audio music on your phone to make sure that it is already working.

Alternatively, forget/delete all saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone to prevent it from connecting to a Bluetooth device automatically.

  • To forget Bluetooth devices, Bluetooth must be enabled on your iPhone Settings so that you can view the list of available devices in range. Then tap the small letter “i” or information icon next to the name of the Bluetooth device that you want to delete/forget.

After forgetting all Bluetooth devices on your phone, turn Bluetooth off and back on again to refresh the system. Try and see if that fixes your iPhone’s no sound problem.

Solution #4: Manage notification settings on your iPhone.

If the no sound problem only exists on selected apps, then there’s a higher chance that the underlying cause of the problem is with that app’s notification settings. To rule this out, check and make sure that the option to Allow Notifications and Sounds on your iPhone is enabled for that app. Here is how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Then, select the apps that you want to allow notifications on.
  4. Tap the Lock Screen Banners and Sounds to enable the notifications.

After the process, check the app that was previously muted and see if you will be hearing it sounds for notification alerts again. You can also manually adjust the volume when using a particular app. Some apps are designed to be not affected by the current volume settings so you may need to adjust the volume level each time you use these apps on your phone. While the app is running or launched, press the Volume Up button on the side of your phone. Alternatively, you can also open the Control Center to adjust the volume.

Solution #5: Update the OS version of your iPhone.

An iPhone that is currently running with an old OS version becomes delicate and is prone to variety of issues caused by software malwares and bugs. Being said, installing the latest iOS version will also rectify multiple issues including the no sound problem.

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap Software Update.

After viewing the terms and conditions of the new update, proceed to download and install latest version. Note as well that you can only the do the update when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network or the cellular data on your phone is on.

Last option: Factory reset your iPhone.

The no sound problem may persist if complex system errors are the main trigger. Usually in this case, the symptom could not be remedied by the initial procedures and therefore requires a full system reset. This is when performing a factory reset on your iPhone is needed. If you wish to proceed, back up all your important files first. You can back up files to iCloud or iTunes on a computer.

After creating backups, you can proceed with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Choose the option to Erase all Content and Settings.
  5. Enter your passcode when asked to proceed.
  6. Tap the option to confirm that you want to erase your iPhone and restore its factory defaults.

The factory reset will then instigate. Once it’s finished, the phone reboots automatically. To use your phone again, you will need to set it up first. Just use the start-up wizard to set up your iPhone as new. Try and see if that solves the problem.

Still having no sound problem on your iPhone XR?

The above solutions are usually enough to get rid of software-related factors that might have caused the audio problem or no sound problem on your iPhone. But if that didn’t happen, then you are more likely dealing with something worse like hardware damage on the phone. Before taking your iPhone to a service center, check its microphone/speaker and make sure that it is free of dust and debris. You can clean it yourself, if necessary.

Contacting Apple Support is also another option to consider given that you have already tried everything on your end but to no avail. There might be some advanced solution that they can recommend. If it is not possible for you to call Apple Support and you don’t have an extra phone to use, then this is when you should visit the nearest Apple-services center in your area and have your iPhone examined by an authorized technician. Your iPhone might have obtained some sort of physical or liquid damage and therefore needs some repair.
