Troubleshooting iPhone XR with apps that won’t update

Firmware issues occur from time to time and one of the things that you may encounter in your iPhone XR is this problem. It’s more of a firmware issue than a minor app problem because you will only be able to update apps if your iPhone is properly connected to the App Store and can authenticate using your Apple ID. If it so happens that your apps won’t update, follow these procedures to try and fix the problem…

First solution: Free up your iPhone XR storage for new app updates.

As mentioned earlier, it is possible that your phone has insufficient memory storage and so it’s no longer able to allocate more files. For this reason, check your phone’s memory to make sure that you have enough space for the apps update. If necessary, you can free up some space by deleting old and unused apps, messages and other obsolete contents. Simply follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Then tap iPhone Storage.
  4. Check for available recommendations to manage the storage space on your device. You can also delete any unused apps on your phone.
  5. Select the app you want to delete and then tap Delete App option.

To delete third-party apps from the Home screen, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Home screen, touch and hold the app icon until it jiggles.
  2. Then tap the X sign in the upper-left corner of the app icon to delete or uninstall the app.
  3. Tap Delete to confirm, and then tap Done.

Once you’re done freeing up space on your iPhone storage, retry installing pending app updates via App Store and see if it’s already working. If your apps won’t update even after this, then you’ve got to move on and try other options.

Second solution: Log out from the App Store and log in again.

Performing this simple tweak can correct App Store problems including apps updating failure. Doing so will likewise help you verify and ensure that you are signed into the App Store using the correct Apple ID and password. Here’s what you should do then:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select iTunes & App Store.
  3. Then tap on your Apple ID located at the top of your screen.
  4. Tap Sign Out. Then go back to the Home screen and restart (soft reset) your iPhone.
  5. Once it is back on, head back to Settings->iTunes & App Store->Sign In and log in again using your Apple ID and password.

Wait until you have successfully logged back into your App Store account and then try to install pending app updates and see if it’s working now. If your apps still won’t update after this procedure, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Disable restrictions for iTunes & App Store Purchases on your iPhone XR.

One of the possible reasons as to why your iPhone is unable to download or update apps from the App Store is because the restrictions for iTunes & App Store Purchases are enabled. To rule out this issue, simply turn off the restrictions from your phone settings with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap Screen Time. Enter your Screen Time passcode if prompted.
  3. Then select Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  5. Check the Installing Apps option and set it to Allow.

Or you could also turn off all the restrictions on your phone. To do so, just head over to Settings-> Screen Time-> Content & Privacy Restrictions and then toggle the switch to turn off restrictions.

After turning off the restrictions, restart (soft reset) your iPhone to clear out cache files from your phone’s internal memory and refresh its operating system. Once it boots up, launch the App Store and try updating the apps again. If they still won’t update, move on to the next procedure.

Fourth solution: Set Date & Time automatically on your iPhone XR.

Incorrect date and time information on your phone can also cause conflicts and errors when installing app updates as the App Store may not be able to sync with the Apple server due to distinct timestamps. To ensure that your phone’s date and time is set or configured correctly, enable the option to Set Automatically under Date & Time second. Doing so will prompt your phone to automatically use time information based on the current time zone on your location. Here’s how to manage date and time settings on your iPhone XR:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Then tap Date & Time.
  4. Toggle the Set Automatically switch to turn it on.

After making necessary changes, reboot your iPhone and then test to see if you are now able to update apps through the App Store. If your device still has some issues and its apps still won’t update, it’s time to troubleshoot the settings and its firmware.

Fifth Solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

Misconfigured phone settings can also led to apps update failure. To eliminate invalid settings from your device, you can restore its default configuration by resetting all settings. This reset erases all your customized settings but doesn’t affect any saved information and files on the phone’s internal storage. Should you wish to proceed, then go ahead and follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted.
  6. And then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

Once the reset is finished, your phone will reboot automatically and then loads the default settings and configuration. Afterwards, enable the features that you will be using including Wi-Fi and reconnect to your wireless network. Open the App Store and try to update the apps again. After doing all these procedures and apps still won’t update, then move on to the next procedure.

Sixth solution: Update the iOS version of your iPhone XR.

Before you check and install available iOS update on your iPhone, make sure that you have an excellent internet connection and at least 50% of its battery life. Updating may take time to complete so your device must have enough power to avoid any possible interruptions. Once you’re ready, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap on Software Update.

You will be prompted with an update notification when a new update is available. Follow the onscreen guide to download and install the new update on your phone. Once you have successfully installed the new iOS update, restart (soft reset) your iPhone XR. Doing so will clear out cached files from your phone’s internal memory and install the new system changes.

You may escalate the problem to Apple support for further assistance, if none of the given solutions is able to fix the problem. Your iPhone XR apps might have failed to update apps due to some temporary server issues like when the App Store server is experiencing some sort of technical issues.
