Troubleshooting iPhone XS with email setup error

Before troubleshooting, verify and ensure that the email account information (email address and password) you entered is valid and correct. Once you have it confirmed, you may proceed and troubleshoot your iPhone XS software with these subsequent solutions.

First solution: Check and refresh the internet connection on your iPhone XS.

The Mail app is one of the internet-operated applications on your device and therefore needs excellent internet connection to carry out its task. If your device is experiencing network connectivity issues from slow browsing to intermittent connection, then that could likely affect the email platform and other web-based applications on your phone.

To check the state of your wireless Internet connection, launch your browser app and test browse multiple websites. If your connection is too slow, then the problem is more likely due to slow browsing or intermittent internet network connection. In this case, the problem is likely rectified by refreshing the internet connection. Here’s what you should do first:

  1. Go to Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select the Wi-Fi menu.
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn off the feature for a few seconds.
  4. After the elapsed time, tap the switch again to turn the Wi-Fi on.

Another way to refresh your iPhone’s internet connection is by performing the Airplane Mode trick. Just launch the Control Center on your iPhone XS and toggle the Airplane Mode icon to turn the feature on. This will temporarily disable your wireless radios including Wi-Fi. Then after a few seconds, tap the Airplane Mode icon again to turn the feature off. The Airplane Mode trick can also be done through your iPhone settings. Just go to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu then toggle the switch on and off again.

Once your phone is has reconnected to your wireless network, open your browser app and navigate to any websites to see if your Internet connection is fixed. By then you can retry setting up the email account on your iPhone XS.

Apps, internal memory and operating system are also refreshed. If you haven’t done this yet, then all you have to do is follow these steps to give your iPhone XS a soft reset:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release the buttons when the Slide to Power off command appears.
  3. Then drag the power off slider to completely turn off your iPhone.
  4. After at least 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

When your iPhone is finished booting up and reconnects to Wi-Fi, retry setting up the email account and see if it goes through now. If you’re still getting an email setup error, then you should troubleshoot further and rule out other factors.

Third solution: Manually set-up the new email on your iPhone XS.

The usual way most people prefer to use when setting up an email on their iPhone is using the automatic Mail account setup. This saves time and effort from recalling and manually entering account information and other required settings to complete the email configurations. However, manually setting up an email is deemed a better option if automatic setup results in an error. To get started, secure all necessary information for the email account you wish to set up. Among the information to prepare includes incoming and outgoing mail server, port numbers, and the like. If you don’t have this information handy, then you utilize the Mail lookup tool or contact your email provider. Once you have all the necessary email settings ready, follow these steps to start setting up the email account again:

  1. Go to Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Mail.
  3. Then select Passwords & Accounts.
  4. Tap Add Account.
  5. Select your email provider.
  6. Then enter all required information into their respective fields like the email address and password.
  7. Then tap Next to continue. If you wish to sync options like Contacts and Calendars, simply mark its corresponding checkbox.
  8. Then tap Save.

After you successfully set up the email account, restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS. Then open your Mail app and check if the newly added email account works as intended. To test its functionality, try to send a sample email message to your own email address (as recipient) then see if you receive the test email on your iPhone XS inbox. If the email shows up on your mailbox, then that denotes that the email account is successfully set up and ready for use. Otherwise, troubleshoot further and try the next procedures to rule out major system errors from the underlying causes.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.

Misconfigured phone settings can also be inflict similar issues to the phone’s email system and thereby results in the same email setup error. If you’ve recently customized your phone settings or installed new updates, try to restore them back to the original values. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset all settings option again to confirm the reset.

Your iPhone will reboot automatically after the reset. Since the phone settings and options are restored to the original values, features that are disabled by default must be re-enabled so you can use them again on your device. Then establish your phone’s internet connection and retry adding the new email account on your iPhone. If the email setup is still unsuccessful, performing a master reset or factory reset can be considered among the last options.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS to its factory default settings (Master Reset).

This reset will wipe out everything from your iPhone’s internal storage along with fatal system errors inflicted by complex bugs and malwares that caused conflicts to the email system. Before you proceed, be sure to create a backup of all your important files so you’d still be able to recover them afterwards. You can back up your iPhone files to iCloud or iTunes based on your preferences. Once the backup is secured, follow these steps to factory reset your iPhone through settings:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and select Reset.
  4. Tap Erase all content and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm the master/factory reset.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes in restoring your phone to its factory default settings. This will require you to use a computer (Windows or Mac) with the latest iTunes version installed. The computer must also have an excellent internet connection so it will be able to access the mail server when carrying out automatic email setup. Then plug your iPhone XS into the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable. Then follow the onscreen prompts to initiate the factory reset. After the reset, follow the initial start-up wizard to set up your iPhone as new again and add the email account you want to use on your device.

Still couldn’t set up new email account on your iPhone XS?

If none of the given solutions worked and you still couldn’t set up or add a new email account on your iPhone XS, then you can escalate the problem to your email service provider for further assistance. Your email service provider can also walk you through a step-by-step manual email setup on your device. This is when you will manually enter the required email server settings including the incoming server and outgoing server, port number to use, and other relevant information. This way you can guarantee that all email data inputs are correct.
