Samsung Galaxy A50 keeps showing ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error

The error message “Settings keeps stopping” that seems to be bugging some owners of the Samsung Galaxy A50 can be just a result of a minor issue or it could also be a result of a serious firmware problem. Settings is not just any ordinary app because it covers almost everything in your phone; from apps, services and other features. Aside from that, it’s a core application so when it crashes, the problem could be with the firmware and not just with the app.

We have encountered several app-related problems in the past and we know that those are just pretty easy issues that could be fixed by doing some basic troubleshooting. In this case however, you have to troubleshoot the firmware and not just the app, although we need to be thorough. That means we have to rule out one possibility after another until it becomes clearer to us what the problem is all about and what causes it. That way we can formulate a solution that can fix the problem once and for all. So, if you’re one of the owners of this device and are currently having similar issue, continue reading as this article may be able to help you.

Troubleshooting Galaxy A50 with ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error

This error pops up randomly even if you’re not doing anything with your device. However, you can easily trigger it by launching Settings or changing any setting within the app. In other words, there’s nothing you can do if this isn’t resolved. So you have to troubleshoot your phone and here’s what you need to do:

First solution: Perform the Forced Restart

The first thing that you have to do is forced restart. I encountered a similar issue in the past wherein the Settings app kept on crashing for no apparent reason. What I did was reboot and the phone just worked properly after that. Instead of doing the normal reboot, it’s best to do the forced restart instead. It’s a simulated battery removal and far more effective than the normal restart as it refreshes your phone’s memory and reloads all apps and services. Here’s how you do that:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A50 logo shows on the screen.

When the phone has finished rebooting, try to access Settings to see if the ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error still pops up. If it still does, then move onto the next solution.

Second solution: Wipe cache partition to fix ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error

There’s nothing much you can do while your phone is in normal mode because Settings crashes immediately after you open it. Therefore, the best thing to do is to run the phone in recovery mode and delete the old system cache so that a new one will be created. When it comes to firmware issues, this procedure has already been proven to be effective. Aside from that, you don’t need to backup your important files if you did this as they won’t be touched. Now, here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A50 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A50 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Deleting the system cache will often fix this kind of problem. That’s always been the case with similar problems we encountered in the past provided that the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way. However, if this doesn’t fix the problem and the error ‘Settings keeps stopping’ still shows once the phone has rebooted, then move on to then next solution.

Third solution: Perform the master reset

You cannot perform the usual factory reset via Settings because the app crashes when you open it. Therefore, you will have to do the alternative method and that’s to reset the phone via Recovery mode. Before that, make sure to copy your important files and data as they will be deleted. It may not be easy since Settings keeps stopping but I’m sure you can manage. After the backup, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Again, as long as the firmware hasn’t been modified, a reset should be able to fix this problem. So, after the reset, set up your phone as a new device.
