Fixing Galaxy S9 with Instagram that crashes

I have personally experienced a lot of times having applications that crash on me when I use them. Some cases are serious since almost all of my Android devices run a custom ROM and I love to tweak some things so it’s expected that issues may occur from time to time. However, if a problem like this occurs and your phone’s firmware hasn’t been modified in any way, it should be easy to fix it. With that said, here’s what you should do about this problem…

First solution: Force restart your phone first

The first thing you must do if it’s the first time that you’ve encounter an app crash issue is to perform the Forced restart which will refresh your device’s memory as well as reload all its apps and services. If the problem isn’t really that serious, then this method will surely fix it. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S9 logo shows on the screen.

Once the phone has rebooted successfully, open the app and see if your Galaxy S9 still has an Instagram that crashes when used. If it’s the case, then troubleshoot the app.

Second solution: Delete the cache of Instagram app

Android creates a cache for every app and these files are important in making each application run smoothly. However, there are times when these files get corrupted and when it happens, performance issues may occur including app crashes. The best thing you should do to rule this out is to delete the cache so that a new one will be created and here’s how you do that:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Instagram.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.

After deleting the cache, try to see if the problem is fixed. If your phone still has Instagram that crashes when opened, then it’s time to reset the app itself.

Third solution: Reset Instagram that crashes

When it comes to apps, a reset means deleting its data files so that new ones will be created. But it also means that the app will be brought back to its default settings and configuration as your preferences will be deleted. It’s a very effective solution for an app problem like this. This is how you do it:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Instagram.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Restart your phone.

After the reboot, open Instagram to see if it still crashes or not. If the error ‘Instagram has stopped’ still greets you or if the app closes immediately after it’s opened, then try the next solution.

Fourth solution: Uninstall Instagram and then reinstall it

Another possibility that you have to address is that the problem could be due to compatibility between the app and the firmware. Perhaps an new version of the app may have been rolled out and you weren’t able to download it. Instead of just updating your phone through the Play Store, it’s best to uninstall the app and remove all its associations with the firmware and other apps. Here’s how you do that:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Instagram.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear data and tap OK to confirm.
  7. Tap the back key once and then touch Uninstall.
  8. Confirm that you want to remove the app from your phone.
  9. Restart your phone to refresh its memory.

After the reboot, follow these steps to reinstall the app…

  1. From the home screen, pull the app drawer up.
  2. Find and tap on Play Store.
  3. In the search field, type ‘instagram’ and hit search.
  4. Tap on Instagram and then touch Install.
  5. When the installation is finished, tap Open.

If this procedure still ends up with Instagram that crashes, then it’s time to troubleshoot the firmware itself.

Fifth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

After doing the first four procedures and your phone is still having Instagram that crashes, then it could mean that the problem is with the firmware and the app crash is just a result of it. Therefore, it’s best to just reset your phone to fix this problem.

However, before the reset, make sure to create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the reset. After the backup, remove your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out of your device. Follow these steps if everything is in order:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S9 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S9 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
