Fixing an iPhone XR that won’t turn on after iOS 13

You should check it physically if there are dents, cracks or scratches that are an indication of physical damage. But assuming that your iPhone has not been dropped or submerged in water, then you can always this problem. Here’s what you need to do…

First solution: Perform the Forced Restart on your iPhone

Most of the time, regardless of whether the iPhone has recently been updated or not, when the device powers down by itself and would no longer respond or won’t turn on, the problem is just a result of a firmware crash. Firmware crashes occurs every now and then but it often happens after a huge update. It’s because some files and caches may already be obsolete after the update, and that could be the reason why the phone crashes. To address this, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.

  2. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key until the Apple logo shows on the screen. force restart iphone xr that won't turn on from an ios update

If you were able to make your iPhone show the Apple logo on the screen, then that’s a sign that the problem is fixed. However, if your device still won’t respond, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Charge your iPhone and do the forced restart

If your iPhone XR that’s running the iOS 13 still won’t turn on or respond after the first procedure, then it’s possible that the battery is drained. Therefore, the next thing you should do is make sure there’s enough charge to power up the device. Most of the time, a drained battery isn’t really a problem, but if the firmware crashed just before the phone turned off, then you’ll be dealing with a couple of issues that both leave the device unresponsive. Here’s what you need to do about it:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.

  2. Using the original cable, connect the phone to its charger.

  3. Regardless of whether the phone shows the charging symbol or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.

  4. While the iPhone is still connected to the charger, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.

  5. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key until the Apple logo shows on the screen.

Based on experience, these two procedures will make the device respond again. However, if your iPhone XR still won’t turn on even after doing these procedures, then it’s time to schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar and have an Apple tech check the device for you.
