How Do I Fix My iPhone 12 Not Responding After iOS Update

A non-responsive iPhone may be due a hardware issue. There might be some sort of damage on the phone’s screen that’s preventing the commands to be executed. However, software bugs also contribute to a not responding issue.

Most of the smartphone problems that are reported can be fixed via a software update, but these updates could result in another issue. What you’ll find below are some easy fixes that will help in resolving an iPhone 12 that stops responding after installing a new software update. Hop on with the journey below to resolve the problem.

First Solution: Force Restart your iPhone 12

Minor problems caused by a software glitch can be rectified by simply restarting the device. However, one great question that needs an answer is how you can restart the device when your phone’ screen is not responding. Worry no more as the force restart will help you with that. This procedure uses the combination of physical buttons on your iPhone 12 to initiate a reset process.

  1. Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.
  2. Press and release the Volume Down button quickly.
  3. Lastly, press and hold the Side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo.

If you are able to restart the iPhone 12 successfully and it starts responding, then update the apps on your iPhone. There might be some sort of in-app bug that is causing the screen to stop responding after the update.

  1. From the Home screen, tap on App Store to open it.
  2. Tap on Today tab at the bottom-left corner.
  3. Then tap on the user profile icon on the top right corner of the screen.
  4. You should see the account details.
  5. Scroll down to the Available Updates section.
  6. Tap on Update next to the app to update individual apps.
  7. Tap on Update All to update all apps simultaneously.

Second Solution: Restore your iPhone 12 via iTunes

If a major software glitch has occurred after installing the latest iOS update, then you might need to restore the device. Since the restoration procedure cannot be executed on the iPhone 12 as the screen is not responding, you will need to prepare a Mac or Windows computer with the latest iTunes installed. Also ensure that your computer runs on the latest operating system that is compatible with your iPhone and it has a good internet connection.

Once you have those things prepared, open the iTunes and connect your device to the computer using the Apple-supplied USB/lightning cable. Then allow iTunes to sync with your iPhone and backup files, if possible. Once the backup is secured, follow these steps to put your iPhone 12 in recovery mode and then restore iOS in iTunes:

  1. Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.
  2. Press and release the Volume Down button quickly.
  3. Then press and hold the Power/Side button once prompted with Connect to iTunes screen. Do not release the button when the Apple logo appears as you will need to enter recovery mode state.
  4. Once you enter the recovery mode, you’ll see either Update or Restore option.
  5. Select Restore if you want to reinstall and download iOS on your device without erasing data.

Do not disconnect your phone and keep it connected until the entire restore process is finished.

Third Solution: Perform a DFU Mode Restore on your iPhone 12

When the iPhone’s system stops responding from any commands, the problem might be fatal and needs a more intrusive solution. The most in-depth type of restore that you can do to your iPhone XS is a Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode restore. This is a state where it allows your device to communicate with iTunes even when the bootloader is not sync or activated.

This procedure is advisable to be performed as long as the device has not incurred any physical stress/trauma such as accidental drops. Performing this process on a physically damaged iPhone could lead in a permanently bricked device. Perform this step at your own risks.

  1. Connect your iPhone 12 to the computer using the supplied USB/Lightning cable. Once connected, open iTunes on your computer.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume up button.
  3. Press and quickly release the Volume down button.
  4. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the screen goes black.
  5. After the screen turns black, press and hold the Volume down button while keep holding down the Power/Side button
  6. Wait for 5 seconds then release the Power/Side button but keep holding the Volume down button until your iPhone 12 shows up in iTunes.
  7. Release the Volume down button once you see your iPhone in iTunes then follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to start restoring your iPhone through iTunes.

If you are able to successfully boot up the device in DFU mode and the procedure is able to fix the problem, just perform a force restart to exit DFU mode on your iPhone 12.

Still Having an iPhone that is Not Responding After Installing an iOS Update

If the problem has not been fixed after performing the given procedures above, then it is time to contact Apple support or visit the nearest Apple service center in your area. This problem might be due to a hardware issue that coincidentally occurred right after installing the iOS update. An Apple authorized personnel should be able to determine the problem and provide official recommendation on how to fix it.
