How to fix Apple iPhone XS No Service error [Troubleshooting Guide]

If your iPhone says No Service in its status bar, it’s telling you that it is not getting a signal from the network. As a result, you can use basic cellular services such as texting and calling on your phone. The problem may be due to some random software errors on your phone or it could be a widespread issue caused by temporary network outage.

The solutions I mapped out below can be used to eliminate software-related factors that might have triggered the No service error on an iPhone XS. Keep reading for more information.

Solution #1: Reboot your iPhone to fix No service error

If this is the first time that your iPhone XS shows a No service error, then it could be just a random network service error. Same with other minor phone issues, such error can easily be rectified by rebooting the iPhone. Doing so will clear out any software glitches that might have hindered the phone from acquiring signal from the network tower. Hence, consider this as the first possible solution to try:

  1. Press and hold the Side or Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release both buttons once the Slide to Power off command appears.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to turn the phone off. Leave it off for at least 30 seconds.
  4. After the given time, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

When your iPhone has completely booted up, check if you are already getting any signal bars. If the signal indicator is still showing nothing but a “no service” label, continue to troubleshoot and eliminate other factors.

Solution #2: Update the OS version of your iPhone XS.

Generally, iOS updates are designed to enhance phone features so as to offer bug fixes to eliminate existing problems. If the no service error is attributed to software bugs, then installing the latest update for your iPhone will likely fix it. To get this done, your iPhone must be connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and has ample of battery life. Then start checking for updates with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap Software Update. A notification will appear on your screen once an update is available.
  4. Tap Download and Install.
  5. Follow the onscreen guide to complete the iOS update.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to update your iPhone manually on a computer. This process requires your to have the latest iTunes version as well as Internet connection.

Once you’re ready, connect your phone to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable. Then, open the iTunes and wait for it to synchronize with your iPhone. When you see the icon of your iPhone in iTunes, click on it and then use the command buttons to start backing up your iPhone data then Update iOS. Don’t disconnect your iPhone from the computer unless the update process is complete. Doing so will prevent corrupting iOS.

Solution #3: Update the carrier settings to fix no service error

A no service error on your device can also be a carrier issue. Thus, updating your iPhone’s carrier settings can also be the key to solving the problem. Some carrier updates are automatically implemented or mandatory while other aren’t. To check for pending carrier updates on your iPhone XS, just refer to these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap on About.

A notification will pop up on the carrier section if a carrier settings update is available. Just follow the given instructions whenever you’re all set to update carrier settings on your phone.

Note that this process also requires an internet connection, so make sure that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi internet.

Solution #4: Reset all settings to fix iPhone XS that has no service.

If the no service error occurred after you customize the settings on your phone or after installing new updates, it is possible that some system settings had been changed resulting for your phone unable to acquire signal from the network base. Thus, it is best to restore the default configuration settings on your phone to correct the issue. To reset all settings on your handset, follow the steps provided below:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Reset.
  4. Select Reset all settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode if prompted.
  6. Then tap Reset all settings to confirm the reset.

After the reset process, restart your iPhone. Once it’s back on, check if you’re already showing signals on your phone.

Solution #5: Do a master reset (factory reset) on your iPhone XS.

This reset will wipe all the data saved on your phone, so make sure to back up your important files prior to doing the process. If the issue is caused by tough bugs and the above mentioned solutions didn’t fix the problem, then you can resort to this last option. You can either do a factory reset through iTunes (which requires a computer) or on the phone settings. In this guide, we will be giving instructions on how to do a factory reset on your phone’s settings. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Reset.
  4. Select Erase all content and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted.
  6. Then tap Erase all content and settings to confirm the factory reset.

Your phone will restart automatically after the reset. Once the phone is turned back on, the settings had been restored to its factory default settings. Follow the start-up wizard to do the initial set up.

Solution #6: Remove and reinsert the SIM card on your iPhone XS.

If the device shows No Service after you accidentally dropped your phone, then it is possible that the SIM card has been dislodged from the tray and therefore needs to be reseated properly. So here’s what you should do then:

  1. Turn off your iPhone completely.
  2. Eject the SIM card tray by inserting the SIM eject tool or a paper-clip into the provided slot located at the right edge of your phone.
  3. Carefully pull out the SIM card tray from the phone.
  4. Then remove the SIM card from the tray,
  5. Check the SIM card and make sure that it is clean and free of debris and scratches. Wipe the SIM card with a clean cloth if necessary,
  6. Place the SIM card back into the tray and make sure that it is properly seated.
  7. Insert the SIM card tray back into the phone and then press it in to lock in place.

After the process, turn your phone on again and see if the No Service error has been fixed by doing this trick.

Still getting No Service error on your iPhone XS?

Contacting your service network provider can be considered among the last options if your iPhone XS is still getting a No Service error after exhausting all possible solutions. You can ask them to check their system and see if there are any unrecorded outages transpiring in your place, which could have affected network services. If you suspect that the problem is due to a damaged SIM card, then you can request for a new SIM card replacement instead.

To rule out the possibility that your iPhone XS has hardware damage, you can take a trip to the nearest Apple service center and have your iPhone scrutinized by an authorized technician. Your iPhone may need some physical repair.
