But it happens to some and may be to you as well given that you’re reading this context. First solution: Restart (soft reset and/or force restart) your iPhone XS.

Random firmware crashes can corrupt certain files and applications. If this happens, there is a tendency for the entire system functions to become affected and thus adverse symptoms arise. Should this be the main triggers of your iPhone’s delayed touchscreen response, then performing a soft reset will likely solve it. Here’s how to refresh your phone’s system and clear out minor system issues:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power off command appears, release both buttons.
  3. The drag the power off slider to the right to completely power off your phone.
  4. After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

If your iPhone screen takes too long to respond or seems not responding at all, then you can do a forced restart instead. This method will still provide you with the same positive result as a soft reset does but how they’re carried out differ. Here’s how to force restart an iPhone XS:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Lastly, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Any minor software glitches that spoiled certain apps and system functions will then be eliminated. But if the delayed touchscreen response symptom continues, proceed to the next applicable solutions.

Second solution: Check and install pending app updates.

If your iPhone XS has running apps that are out-dated, this can also trigger the same touchscreen symptom to occur. Apps that are out-dated are typically prone to errors and software bugs. And if they’re erratic, they can trigger other apps to glitch as well. This is when installing app updates is recommended. Similar to iOS updates, app updates also provide fix patches and codes to eliminate random bugs and malwares on a certain app. You can actually set your apps to auto-update but if you haven’t configured or enabled this setting on your iPhone yet, just follow these steps to manually download and install pending app updates on your iPhone XS:

  1. From your Home screen, tap the App Store icon.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom right of the page and select the Updates tab. You will then be prompted with the list of apps with pending updates.
  3. Then tap on Update button next to the app’s name to install its pending update.
  4. Otherwise, tap on the Update All button to install all pending apps at once.

After installing all the pending apps updates, restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS for the new app changes to be applied properly. Then check if touchscreen issue has been resolved. If not, move to the next solution.

  • Installing app updates also require a stable Internet access so make sure your device is connected to the Internet with a decent Internet speed. Sufficient memory space and battery life are also among the main requisites proper to updating.

Third solution: Check and install the latest software version available for your iPhone XS.

Phone issues caused by complex software bugs may not be easily corrected by just performing a soft reset or installing pending app updates. Hence, an update for your phone’s operating system is also needed to eliminate issues like delayed touch screen response inflicted by tough bugs and malwares. These updates usually provide bug fixes to address widespread issues affecting different iOS devices. Just follow these steps to check for updates available through your iPhone settings:

  1. From the Home screen go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Then tap on Software Update menu.

You will be prompted with an update information if the latest iOS version is available for your iPhone. Review the terms and conditions and then follow the onscreen commands or instructions to download and install the iOS update. Once the update has been completed, reboot/soft reset your iPhone to refresh its system and for the new system changes to be implemented accordingly.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.

Invalid system configuration can also be to blame if the issue started after customizing your iPhone’s settings. This method won’t require you to back up your device as it won’t affect any saved data on your phone’s internal memory. All customized settings are deleted and the original values and options are restored. Any existing issues tied to incorrect settings are likewise resolved. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset all settings again to confirm the reset.

After the reset, your iPhone will reboot itself and all your customized settings are now deleted. To use features that are disabled by default, you will need to re-enable them. This will include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other necessary functions.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS to its factory default settings

If the delayed touchscreen response symptom continues after performing all the given solutions above, doing a master reset can be deemed among the last options. The problem might be due to a complex system error that couldn’t be rectified by basic solutions. Before you reset your iPhone though, be sure to back up all your files from the iPhone storage to iCloud or iTunes because they will also be deleted in the process. After securing the backup, you can proceed to these steps to carry out a factory reset through your iPhone settings:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Erase all content and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm the factory/master reset.

Allow your phone to delete all data stored on its internal memory and restore its factory default settings. If your phone reboots itself, then the master reset has been completed. By then you can use the start-up wizard to set up your iPhone as new.

Meanwhile if your phone’s screen is totally unresponsive, performing the above solution wouldn’t be possible. And this is when iTunes play its role. If you have a Windows or Mac computer that has the latest version of iTunes app, you can use it to manually erase and restore factory settings on your iPhone XS instead. Simply connect your iPhone XS to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable. And once iTunes recognizes your iPhone, you can just click on the given commands and controls to instigate a master reset. Just be sure to back up all your important files to your preferred computer folder via iTunes beforehand. Failure to back up files will result in permanent data loss, thus you will no longer be able to recover those files afterwards

Among other advanced procedures and potential solutions you can try if a factory reset failed to solve the problem are a recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore. These methods both require the use of iTunes so you can consider that an option if you wish to troubleshoot further.

Is your iPhone XS touchscreen response still delayed?

If your iPhone XS is still responding very slowly, then hardware issues must be ruled out next. If it isn’t a dirty or oily screen, some touchscreen components might have obtained some physical or liquid damage and is now starting to show the symptoms. This is usually the case if you’ve previously dropped or exposed your iPhone to any sort of liquid before. To rule out hardware damage, you can bring your iPhone to the nearest Apple service center and ask an authorized technician to run a series of hardware test to see if there are any damage screen components that needs fixing or replacement.

You can also report the problem straight to your iPhone carrier, if it is still covered by warranty. Availing for service warranty or new replacement is better than paying for a hefty service charge.
