Having a phone that keeps on lagging and freezing is definitely annoying. This issue has been commonly observed on smartphones with lower-end chipset. We may have already published articles that could help you fix your problem. Find issues that are similar to yours and feel free to use our solutions.

First solution: Quit all apps running in the background.

Software updates post danger to apps that are left suspended in the background while the process is ongoing. Random glitches inflicted by the new software can cause these apps to go rogue causing relevant symptoms to occur. Luckily, these errors linked to erratic apps can be cleared by closing all apps that are running in the background. This should be able to handle the lagging/freezing issue if it is caused by rogue apps. Here are the steps:

  1. Swipe your finger up and then pause from the Home screen.
  2. Swipe left or right to navigate through the apps preview.
  3. Then swipe up on each app’s preview to close individual background apps.

If all apps in the background are already cleared, try using your phone as usual then check if the issue has been resolved.

Second solution: Reset your iPhone XR.

Lagging or freezing device may be due to changes from the latest software update that are not yet fully implemented. This could happen if there are random bugs embedded on the software that’s preventing proper implementation of changes. The best way to expedite the implementation of changes and to clear any errors caused by the recent software update is to reboot your device. Doing so will also clear dump cache and refresh your phone’s system. This should give your phone a boost on its performance and might resolve the lagging/freezing issue.

One way for you to restart your device is via soft reset. You may refer to the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the Power/Side button and either of the Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release both buttons once Slide to Power off prompt appears on the screen.
  3. Drag the Power off slider to the right to turn off your phone.
  4. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power/Side button again until you see the Apple logo.

If your phone’s screen is completely frozen, performing the soft reset process is not feasible. A force restart is your alternative option to reset your phone. Here’s how:

  1. Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.
  2. Press and release the Volume Down button quickly.
  3. Lastly, press and hold the Side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo.

You can try checking if your phone still lags or not anymore after it boots up.

Third solution: Install pending app updates on your iPhone XR.

Rogue apps that could cause lagging/freezing issue might be resolved by updating outdated apps on your device. App developers are constantly innovating fixes for certain issues encountered by their app in the long run. Updating your apps to the latest version allows you to install necessary fixes for in-app glitches. This should be good enough in improving your phone’s performance and might resolve the lagging/freezing issue. If you want to try this, simply refer to the steps below:

  1. From the Home screen, tap on App Store to open it.
  2. Tap on Today tab at the bottom.
  3. Then tap on the user profile icon on the top right corner of the screen.
  4. You should see the account details.
  5. Scroll down to the Available Updates section.
  6. Tap on Update next to the app to update individual apps.
  7. Tap on Update All to update all apps simultaneously.

After installing all app updates, reboot your device as it will help in proper implementation of changes on the app and refresh your device. After rebooting your phone, use it as normal to check if it rectifies the issue.

Fourth solution: Perform a reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

Having an incorrect or invalid setting on your phone can greatly affect its performance. Updating to a major software update like iOS 13 makes your phone vulnerable to iOS overrides and could alter the settings automatically. If that’s the reason why your phone keeps on lagging/freezing, performing an all settings reset will help you delete all customized settings and revert them to its default values and options. That should also clear settings being overridden by the software update. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Tap the Reset All Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode once prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm all settings reset.

Your phone will restart automatically after the reset process is done. Use your phone as you normally do once it boots up to check if the lagging/freezing issue goes away.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone to its default factory settings.

If the system glitch is tough enough to withstand the previous procedures, you might need to opt-in for a stronger solution. Complex system errors caused by the software update could be eliminated by restoring your iPhone XR to its default factory settings. Stubborn glitches will be wiped out including all contents on your device. Since you’ll lose your personal information with this process, it is recommended to create backups beforehand. If you’re all set, here’s how to execute a factory reset:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Tap the Erase all contents and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode once prompted.
  6. Then tap to confirm all settings reset.

Once master reset is completed, your phone will reboot automatically in order to apply default factory configurations. Setting up your iPhone like a new one is mandatory in order to use it again. Initial wizard setup should make things easy for you.

What to do if your iPhone continues to lag and freeze?

Some fatal system errors might have been inflicted by the recent software update if all procedures listed above did not fix the lagging and freezing problems on your iPhone XR. In cases where the issue is persistent, performing advanced solutions like recovery mode restore and DFU mode restore might do the trick. These things are optional, and you can research further about the process.

Another alternative option that you can try is to contact Apple support as they can provide you with more information as well as official recommendations regarding the issue.
