First solution: Toggle the ringer switch.

Your iPhone device won’t produce any sounds if it is set to silent/mute mode. Though the no sound problem occurs right after installing an iOS update, it is still necessary to check your ringer switch and make sure that it is not set to silent mode. To get this done, follow these steps:.

  1. With your iPhone XR facing up, flip the switch downwards to put your phone in silent mode. The orange bar will then become visible, indicating that your phone is in mute/silent mode.
  2. Then flip the switch upwards to put your phone in ring mode. Your iPhone is already in ring mode when the orange bar on the switch is no longer visible.

This tweak should refresh your phone’s audio functions too. If necessary, adjust the volume and set it to the highest level by pressing the Volume keys on the side of your iPhone XR. If it is still producing no sound even when on max volume level, try the next workaround.

Second solution: Reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XR.

Your iPhone’s internal memory needs to be refreshed every time there’s a new update installed like iOS update. This is to make sure that the new system changes will be implemented properly. Aside from that, cache files and corrupted data that might have conflicted the audio system shall be cleared out after the reset. Should you wish to give it a try, here are the steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to turn off your device.
  4. Wait for 30 seconds, then press and hold the Side/Power button again until your phone reboots.

Once your iPhone XR finished booting up, open any sound-enabled apps to test of the audio functions on your phone and see if it is already working. If your iPhone still has no sound after the soft reset, proceed to the next solution.

Third solution: Turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone XR.

Most system updates automatically override the device current settings. So even if the Bluetooth feature was disabled prior, there’s still a chance that it is enabled after the software update. And once your phone is connected to a Bluetooth-enabled device, its audio output will then be routed to the connected accessory. Therefore, your iPhone will no longer produce sounds. To rule this out, simply disable Bluetooth by performing these steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth menu.
  3. If the feature is enabled, toggle the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature off. It is also recommended to delete Bluetooth connections saved on your device when no longer in use. Simply tap the information (i) icon next to the Bluetooth connection’s name and then select Forget This Device option.

Alternatively, you can also launch Control Center to manage the Bluetooth feature on your iPhone XR. Then check any audio-enabled apps like YouTube to see if your phone is already producing sounds. If it still has no sound after this, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Disable DND (Do Not Disturb) feature on your iPhone XR.

Another feature that will silence calls. text, and other alert notifications when enabled is the DND (Do Not Disturb) feature. Being said, check DND feature and make sure that it is not preventing your device from making sounds. Here are the steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select Do Not Disturb option.
  3. Tap the Do Not Disturb switch to disable the feature. Notification sounds for call, text, and other alerts should then be restored after DND is disabled.

After making the necessary changes, check any sound-enabled apps to test the audio of your iPhone XR. If it still has no sound, continue troubleshooting your device.

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and select Reset.
  4. Tap on Reset all settings option.
  5. When asked, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

After the reset, all settings will be restored to default values and options. Proceed to re-enable the features you will be using again. Try to see if your iPhone still has no sound, and if the problem continues, then move on to the next solution.

Sixth solution: Factory reset your iPhone

If none of the given solutions work and your iPhone XR is still producing no sound, you might be dealing with tough post-update bugs that need complex solution. Being said, you now need to carry out the factory reset to clear out the audio error inflicted by iOS bugs. Note that this will also delete the important files, so make sure to back them up beforehand. Then follow these steps to restore your phone to factory default settings:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Erase all content and settings from the menu options.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Then select the option to confirm factory settings reset on your iPhone XR.

Once the reset has been completed, your iPhone XR will reboot automatically. Once it back on, follow the onscreen instructions to set your iPhone as new again.
