Fix an Apple iPhone XR with no Internet access while connected to WiFi

No Internet access or no network connection has been one of the widespread issues faced by smartphone users to date. This could happen due to network problems on your Internet service provider and likewise due to some software-related issues on the device itself. There are also problems that are attributed to firmware crashes on the wireless router or modem.

In worst scenarios, hardware damage like a busted modem or router in use or damaged network components on the phone are to blame. The main problem tackled in this post is on the iPhone XR that has no Internet access while connected to WiFi network. Sounds bizarre but it could happen and it transpires due to many factors.

Troubleshooting iPhone XR that has no Internet access

If you’re one of the unlucky people who are facing the same WiFi dilemma, I’ve lined up some quick solutions that you can try on. Read on to learn what to do if your iPhone XR has no Internet access even when it’s connected to the WiFi network.

Before you begin troubleshooting, check and ensure that your iPhone is already running the latest iOS version. If it’s not yet updated, then you should consider doing so. Updates are imperative to keep your device system stable and optimum.

Don’t forget to reconnect to WiFi after performing each procedure to test and see if the problem is fixed.

First solution: Turn off your WiFi then restart your iPhone XR.

Turning off the WiFi connection on your phone for a few seconds and then back on again  allows the system to do a quick refresh. This is one of the common workarounds that has been proven effective in clearing out minor network glitches that might be preventing your phone from getting a stable Internet access. Here are the steps:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select WiFi.
  3. Tap the toggle/switch button to turn it off.
  4. Wait for a few seconds then tap toggle the again to turn it on.

If the issue persists after refreshing your WiFi connection, performing a soft reset might come in handy to resolve the problem. Doing so will clear out network connection issues that might be hindering your iPhone from gaining Internet access through a WiFi network. To perform a soft reset on your iPhone XR, simply follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power/Side button and either of the Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release both buttons once you see the Slide to Power off prompt.
  3. Drag the Power Off slider to the right to turn off your phone.
  4. Wait for 30 seconds and then press and hold the Power/Side button again to turn on your phone.

Wait for the reboot process to complete and then try accessing any website and pages through your phone’s browser app and see if your phone is now able to connect.

Second solution: Enable and then disable Airplane mode.

Radio connections including WiFi may sometimes experience network errors and causes an unstable internet connection that could eventually lead to no Internet access at all. An old trick that’s been proven to work wonders in resolving such problems is the so-called Airplane Mode trick.

Enabling Airplane mode on your iPhone XR will disable all radio transmissions and thereby helps in clearing out minor network-related errors. Disabling the Airplane mode on the other hand, will resume all the wireless features on your phone. Performing this trick may also be able to fix the problem on your iPhone Xs so you might as well give it a try and see what happens. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the toggle switch on the Airplane mode menu to enable the feature.
  3. Perform a soft reset while Airplane mode is turned on.
  4. After the phone reboots, go back to Settings > Airplane mode
  5. Then tap the Airplane mode toggle switch to disable the feature.

Wait for your phone to establish wireless connection again and then check if you’re already able to browse any websites using WiFi network.

Third solution: Forget WiFi Networks on your iPhone XR.

If the WiFi network you’re using has been corrupted, then it could be the main reason why your iPhone has no Internet access even when it shows connected to the WiFi network. This usually happens due to some complex network data system errors. If this is the case, then removing all saved WiFi network on your phone including the corrupted WiFi network in use will likely resolve the issue. Just follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, access Settings
  2. Select WiFi
  3. Look for the WiFi network that you want to forget then tap the information (i) icon next to the network name.
  4. Tap Forget This Network
  5. Read the warning prompt then tap Forget to confirm.

Also forget any other saved WiFi networks saved from your device to prevent them from causing conflicts to the chosen WiFi network.

Fourth solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XR.

No internet access while connected to a WiFi network could also be attributed to some incorrect or invalid network settings on the phone. If you happen to lose internet connection right after modifying some network settings or installing software update, then the problem is likely inflicted by incorrect settings configuration. To rule out this issue, performing a reset network settings will be necessary as this will clear all customized settings and revert it to the default configurations and values. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General
  3. Scroll to and select Reset
  4. Tap Reset Network Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode once prompted.
  6. Then select the option to confirm network settings reset.

After the reset process is completed, your iPhone will reboot automatically. Wait for it to boot up, then enable features that you’ll need including WiFi to reconnect to the network.

Fifth solution: Perform a Factory reset on your iPhone XR.

If there’s still no Internet access on your phone after performing all the above procedures, then you might be dealing with a major system problem caused by complex errors and glitches that usually require more advanced solutions. At this point, performing a master reset or factory reset will delete all saved information including fatal system errors and then restore all default settings on your iPhone XR can be deemed among the next possible solutions. But before you proceed, back up important files to your iCloud or iTunes account so you would still be able to recover them afterwards. If everything is ready, then you may follow the steps below:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General
  3. Scroll down to and then select Reset
  4. Select the Erase All Contents and Settings option. This will trigger the master reset on your iPhone XR.
  5. Once prompted, enter your device passcode.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

After the factory reset is completed, your iPhone will reboot automatically and then restore all default settings. Just complete the initial set up process like what you did when you first got a hold of your new iPhone.

Factory reset usually solves major software-related issues including those that may have caused no Internet access while connected to WiFi network. With that said, everything should be working properly after the initial setup.
