Troubleshooting an iPhone XR that has no sound after the iOS 13
Being thorough is the best way to go when troubleshooting a device that has no sound. That doesn’t just accurately diagnose the issue and fix the problem, it also prevents data loss. That’s why we always follow a system when trying to fix a device. With that being said, here’s what you need to do:
First solution: Force restart your iPhone XR
If your iPhone XR still has audio before you updated it to iOS 13 but lost it shortly after the update, then it’s probably a firmware or software-related problem. In fact, it might be pretty minor that a simple reboot may be able to fix it. But it’s best to do the forced restart as it’s more effective than the usual reboot. Here’s how it’s done on your iPhone XR:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key until the Apple logo shows on the screen.
Your iPhone will continue the usual boot process until it reaches the lock screen or the home screen. After this, try to see if it has regained its audio. If it still has no sound after this, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Make sure the volume is set to an audible level
Now, this is a no-brainer but it’s important that you do this because this problem that seems to be pretty serious might just be due to a muted iPhone. First off, toggle the ringer on the left side of the phone and make sure it’s not set to silent. Then press the Volume button to see the level, and it’s best to turn it all the way up just to make sure.
After doing this and your iPhone XR still has no sound, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Reset all the settings on your iPhone
The next thing you have to do if your iPhone XR still has no sound after doing the first two procedures is to bring the phone’s settings back to the factory defaults. This will rule out the possibility that this problem is just due to a setting that may have caused inconsistencies in the system. So, follow these steps to reset the settings of your iPhone XR. Don’t worry, none of your files or data will be deleted if you did this.
- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Find and tap General.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
- Touch Reset All Settings.
- If prompted, enter your security lock.
- Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.
Your iPhone will reboot after this, once it has finished rebooting, try to use the phone as you normally would to see if it still has no sound. If the problem persists, then move on to the next solution.
Fourth solution: Factory reset your iPhone that has no sound
A reset will fix this problem but we don’t usually suggest this procedure without exhausting all possibilities first. At this point though, you don’t have much of a choice, so make sure to create a backup of your files and data because they will all be deleted. After the backup, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:
- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Find and tap General.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
- Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
- Tap Erase Now.
- If prompted, enter your security lock.
- Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed with the reset.
