What to do if your Apple iPhone XS won’t turn on?

We have received complaints from some of our readers saying that their Apple iPhone XS won’t turn on for some reason. Some reported that the problem started after they updated their iPhones to iOS 12.3.1 while others said the problem just occurred without apparent reason or cause.

In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your iPhone XS that won’t turn on. I will also share with you the solution that many owners used to fix the same problem with their iPhones. Here’s what you need to do if your Apple iPhone XS won’t turn on

Most of the time owners would think that their device has some kind of a hardware problem if the phone powers down by itself and would no longer respond. But the truth is that this issue isn’t really that serious. In fact, you may be able to fix it just by doing one or a couple of procedures and that’s what I want to share with you today. So, without further adieu, here’s what you need to do…

First solution: Force restart to fix iPhone XS won’t turn on

This must be the first thing you have to do because most of the time the reason why a smartphone won’t respond or turn on is because of a system crash. Since your iPhone XS has a non-removable battery, you can’t pull it out to “power shock” it. So, all you need is the forced reboot which a simulated battery removal procedure. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears and then release it.

Most of the time, this procedure will fix problems like this but if your phone is still not responding, try doing the same procedure a few more times and if it still not working, then you have to move on to the next procedure.

Second solution: Charge iPhone XS and perform Forced Reboot 

Here’s a fact, one of the most common cause of an unresponsive phone is a drained battery. We don’t know for sure if that’s the case here but you don’t have much of a choice now that your iPhone refused to respond with the forced reboot. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Plug in the wired charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Using the original lightning cable, connect your iPhone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether your iPhone XS shows the charging sign or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. After which, quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  5. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  6. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears and then release it.

If your iPhone boots up successfully after this, then it must have been just due to a drained battery that may have also resulted to a firmware crash. It’s no big deal but there’s no guarantee that it won’t happen again in the future. But at least, now you know what to do if your iPhone XS becomes unresponsive and won’t turn on again. Should it occur again in the future, try doing the same thing but once the devices boots up, restore your iPhone XS:

  1. Plug your iPhone XS  in to your computer using the original Lightning cable to USB port.
  2. While it’s connected, press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  3. Then quick press and release the Volume Down button.
  4. Next, press and hold the Side/Power button and continue to hold as it restarts. Don’t release the Side/Power button when the Apple logo appears as you need to put the device in a recovery state.
  5. Release the Side/Power button when you see the Connect to iTunes logo on the screen.
  6. Go to iTunes then you should see a message saying that your connected iOS device is in recovery mode and prompts options to update or restore.
  7. Select the Restore option to wipe everything from the phone system and then restore iOS through iTunes.

Once you’ve done all these things and your iPhone XS still won’t turn on, then it’s time that an Apple technician checks your device. Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar and send your phone in for check up. As long as your iPhone doesn’t have any signs of physical or liquid damage, it should be fixed.
