Thus, setting up an email account is one of the first things that’s done after procuring a new device. After setting up the email account, you are all set to send and receive emails on your phone anytime and anywhere, for as long as it’s connected to the Internet. Nonetheless, there are some factors that could cause trouble and you will just realize that some is wrong if you cannot send or receive emails as you normally do.

If your iPhone can’t send or receive emails, the problem could be account-related or just a minor connectivity issues. We need to troubleshoot the device to know exactly why this problem happens. With that said, here are the things you need to do…
First solution: Quit the Mail app and reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XR.
Random app glitches may affect your Mail app functions and thereby result in being unable to send and receive emails on your iPhone. If you’ve recently opened Mail app and haven’t closed the app, it is possible that it crashed while it’s left suspended in the background. - On your Home screen, swipe your finger upward and then pause.
- Swipe left or right to search the Mail app preview.
- Then swipe the Mail app preview upward to close it.
It is also recommended to close any other background apps to prevent any of them from causing conflicts with the Mail app functions. After closing all the background apps, reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XR to eliminate minor system errors including corrupted temporary data that are causing the Mail functions to fail. Here is how to soft reset your iPhone:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- Once the Slide to power off command appears, release the buttons.
- Slide the power slider off to the right to completely turn off the phone.
- After a few seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears then release.
There is no need to create a backup beforehand as this reset will not cause any data loss on your device. Just wait until your iPhone is finished booting up then launch the Mail app to create a sample email to send and receive.
Second solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XR.
Having misconfigured or invalid network settings on your iPhone may also result to various network issues including sending and receiving email problems. To eliminate network errors and glitches that are attributed to invalid network configurations, restoring the default or original network values and server settings can help clear out network errors and will likely fix any associated issue affecting the Mail app operations. Here what you should do then:
- Open the Settings app from your Home screen.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
- Select Reset network settings from the options.
- When prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.

- Go to Settings from the Home screen, and then select Password & Accounts menu.
- Tap on Add Account option.
- Then select your email provider.
- Key in the correct information for the email address and password and then tap Next to continue.
- Once the Mail app verified your email account, select the information from your email account that you wish to be sync on your device like Contacts and Calendars.
- Then tap Save.
Wait until the email set up has been completed. Then open your Mail app and try sending a sample email to your own email address. If you can receive the email, then it denotes that email processing via Mail app is already working as intended. Otherwise, proceed to the next solution to rule out other factors.
Fourth solution: Verify and configure the email settings.
Upon setting up the email account on your device, the iOS automatically uses the correct account settings. However, there is still a tendency of invalid values being set. To ensure that the correct settings for incoming and outgoing servers are used, check the email settings in your Mail app. If you are not sure what information to use, check the Mail Settings Lookup tool at the Apple website or contact your email service provider to get the correct server information. Then follow the steps below to verify the email account settings that you have on your iPhone:
- From the Home screen, go to Settings.
- Select Password & Account.
- Select your email account.
- Then tap on the email address next to Account to check for incoming and outgoing mail server information.
Make sure that it matches with the information provided by your email provider or the recommended settings shown on the Mail Settings Lookup tool.
Fifth solution: Update the software of your iPhone.
If you’re still unable to send and receive emails on your iPhone XR via Mail app after performing all the above procedures, then you must be dealing with complex email errors or critical Mail bug that needs more advanced solution. These are the instances when iOS updates play a vital role.
