What to do if iPhone Notifications no longer work after the iOS 13 update

We have readers who reported that their iPhone notifications are no longer working shortly after they’ve updated their devices to the recent iOS 13 update. What it means is that when messages or calls come in, the user will no longer be able to hear the notification sound. If the settings are all correct, then this problem is properly just a pretty minor firmware-related issue.

In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your iPhone that no longer plays the notification sound. We will try to look into all possibilities and rule them out one after another until we can figure out what the problem really is and what needs to be done to fix the issue. If you’re an owner, continue reading this post as you may find it helpful.

Fixing iPhone Notifications that are not working after iOS 13

As I said earlier, this problem could be pretty minor and you may only need to do some basic troubleshooting procedures to fix it. So, the course of this guide will be to rule out one possibility after another. With that said, here’s what you need to do:

First solution: Make sure the iPhone is not set to silent mode

This is a no-brainer but remember that the ringer switch can be toggled accidentally without you knowing about it. If your iPhone has been working properly prior to this problem, then it’s possible that the switch got toggled and the device was set to silent. There are also times when a glitch occurs wherein the iPhone notifications seem to be disabled and flipping the ringer switch back and forth will fix the problem. So, here’s what you need to do to rule out this possibility…

  1. Flip the ringer switch downward (if it’s positioned to ring mode). You will then see an orange/red bar in the switch. This denotes that the phone is set to mute.
  2. Next, flip the ringer switch upward again to set it back to ring mode. The orange/red bar on the switch will then disappear.

After making sure that your iPhone is not set to silent mode, try to press one of the volume buttons to know the audio level. It’s best that while troubleshooting a problem like this, the volume should be turned all the way up. You may also access the volume slider from the Control Center.

After doing these things and your iPhone notifications are still not working, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Restart your iPhone

System glitches may occur every now and then and while the results may seem like serious issues, they’re actually pretty easy to fix. In fact, there’s a bigger chance you will be able to fix any glitch by doing just a simple restart.

To soft reset/reboot an iPhone X or later variant, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the Power off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to power off your iPhone completely.
  3. Then after 30 seconds, press the Side button again to turn your iPhone back on.

To soft reset/reboot an iPhone 8, 8 Plus or earlier iPhones with a Home button, refer to these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Top or Side button until the Power off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to power off the phone completely.
  3. After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Top or Side button again to turn the phone back on.
  4. Allow your phone to finish rebooting and once it’s back up and ready, test its audio functions using any of the aforementioned methods to trigger notification alerts on your iPhone.

If your iPhone notifications are still not working after the restart, then try the next solution.

Third solution: Make sure your iPhone is not paired with a Bluetooth device

When a smartphone is paired or connected to a Bluetooth device aside from the Apple Watch and camera snappers, the audio will always be channeled through that device. That could be the reason why your iPhone notifications are not working. To rule this out, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Touch Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is enabled, you should see the list of saved Bluetooth devices at the lower section of the screen.
  3. Select the Bluetooth device then tap the information “i” icon next to it.
  4. Then tap Forget this Device. This will delete the selected Bluetooth device from your phone.

Do the same to delete all other saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone so that none of them would trigger your device to auto-connect or pair with a Bluetooth-enabled accessory upon turning on. Or you can just turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone completely through these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth.
  3. Toggle the switch to turn Bluetooth off.
  4. Bluetooth functions are now disabled on your iPhone.

After making sure that your device is not paired or connected with a Bluetooth device but the iPhone notifications are still not working, then try the next solution.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings to fix iPhone notifications issue

Most of the time, a problem like this is caused by some settings that were inadvertently changed. To better rule out this possibility, it’s best to reset all the settings on your iPhone to bring them all back to default. Don’t worry, none of your files or data will be deleted if you do this. Thus, it’s effective but safe for your data. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Touch Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot after this, once it has finished rebooting, try to use the phone as you normally would to see if the iPhone notifications are now working properly. If the problem persists, then you have to do the next procedure.

Fifth solution: Factory reset your iPhone

After doing all the previous procedures and the iPhone notifications are still not working, then the next thing you have to do is reset your device. As long as this problem is firmware-related, you should be able to make your iPhone sound off again when notifications are received. However, prior to the reset, make sure to sync your iPhone with iCloud so that all your important files will be backed up. After which, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed with the reset.

After the reset, set up your iPhone as a new device and see if the iPhone notifications are now working. If not, then it’s probably and issue with the loudspeaker. Therefore, scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar so that a technician can check the device for you.
