Fixing an iPhone that’s been sluggish and freezing randomly

Sluggishness and random freezes are among the most common performance issues any smartphone owner may encounter. But don’t worry, you can fix them by doing some basic troubleshooting procedures. Here’s what you need to do about them…

First solution: Force restart your iPhone

If your iPhone became sluggish and freezing randomly but not frequently, then there’s a chance that it’s just a result of a minor firmware glitch. Or, the firmware may be crashing every now and then as some apps or data files may have become obsolete after the installation of the new firmware. Most of the time, new system cache and data files get created after an update but there are instances wherein you have to do something to get them replaced. In this case, a forced restart may be helpful. So, follow these steps to do the Forced Restart, after all, it’s safe for both your data and your device, but very effective against minor firmware related issues. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then the Volume Down button.
  2. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key for 15 seconds or until the Apple logo shows on the screen.

Once your iPhone has successfully rebooted, try to see if the problem is fixed and that it’s no longer sluggish or freezing randomly.

Second solution: Reset all the Settings on your iPhone

Your iPhone is now running on a new firmware but has been sluggish and freezing. The forced restart has not been able to help as well. The other possibility is that some settings may be the reason why your phone is acting like this. So, to rule it out, you have to bring your iPhone back to its default settings and configuration without deleting your files and data. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Touch Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

Once the settings reset, try to see if your phone is still sluggish and freezing, if it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Factory reset your iPhone that’s sluggish and freezing

After the first two procedures and your iPhone is still sluggish and freezing randomly, the next thing you have to do is to reset it. A reset will be able to fix this problem for sure, provided that the firmware has not been modified in any way.

However, prior to the reset, make sure to create a copy of your important files and data because they will all be deleted. After the backup, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed with the reset.
  9. Now, enter your Apple ID password and tap Erase.

After the reset, set up your iPhone as a new device. I hope that we’ve been able to help you fix your iPhone that has been sluggish and freezing after the iOS 13.2.2.
