One of the most important functions of your phone is call processing particularly, making and receiving phone calls. Most people would customize the ringer alert tone on their phones to make sure they would hear their phone ringing for incoming calls. Nevertheless, many people who do the same still ended up missing some important phone calls simply because they don’t hear their phone ringing when those calls arrived.
Problems like this usually occur whenever the phone is experiencing random firmware issues. In worst cases, your phone may not ring for incoming calls due to hardware damage. Tackled in this post is a pertinent issue on the iPhone XR that’s not ringing on incoming calls. Read on to find out why this happens and what to do in order to resolve the issue.

Why does your iPhone not ringing for incoming calls?
There are many possible reasons as to why you’re iPhone is not ringing for incoming calls. This can happen if you’ve accidentally set your phone to Silent Mode. The same thing can happen if Bluetooth and Do Not Disturb features are enabled. Another possible reason is that your iPhone could have been stuck in headphone mode. In most cases though, software-related factors such as random firmware crashes, audio system failures, bad apps, and faulty updates are the usual triggers. It is therefore recommended to eliminate these software-related factors before setting up a service appointment at the Genius bar. Feel free to refer to this simply walkthrough.
First solution: Restart (soft reset) your iPhone XR.
The easiest way to clear out random bugs and malwares that might have been causing trouble to your phone’s notification system and prevented it from ringing on incoming calls is to do a soft reset or a system restart. Here is how:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- Release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears.
- Drag the power off slider to the right to turn off your phone.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.
All cache files and corrupted data including those might have conflicted with your phone’s notification alert system should then be eliminated after the soft reset.
Second solution: Toggle the Mute Switch ON and OFF on your iPhone XR.
If your iPhone is still not ringing on incoming calls even if it’s already set to Ringer mode, flip the Mute switch on and off. This is a handy trick when it comes to refreshing audio functions of your iPhone. The Mute/Ringer switch is located on the left side of your phone. If the orange line inside the switch is no longer visible, then that means the ringer is turned on and therefore, sounds are enabled on your phone. You can also access your iPhone settings menu to adjust the ringer and alerts volume using the built-in audio system controls. Here is how:
- Open the Settings app from the Home screen.
- Select Sounds & Haptics.
- Drag the Ringer and Alerts slider up to increase the volume.
After making the necessary changes to your phone’s sound and volume settings, place a test call using another phone and see if your phone is ringing already.
Third solution: Check and manage Do Not Disturb (DND) on your iPhone XR.
One of the iOS features that can stop alert tones on your iPhone when enabled is the Do Not Disturb feature. If DND is turned on, alert sounds for incoming calls, texts, or apps notification alerts aren’t working, so you won’t hear your iPhone sound for any of these notifications. To make sure that this isn’t barring your iPhone from ringing for incoming calls, disable Do Not Disturb through settings. Just follow these steps:
- Go to Settings from your Home screen.
- Tap Do Not Disturb.
- If the DND feature is enabled, tap the switch to turn the feature off.
Alternatively, you can also access and manage Do Not Disturb by launching the Control Center on your iPhone. Then from the control center, tap the crescent moon-like icon to turn the feature on or off.
Fourth solution: Disable Bluetooth and forget/delete Bluetooth connections on your iPhone XR.
Once your iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth-enabled device, it won’t produce any sounds because the audio output will be routed to its paired Bluetooth-enabled device. If that is the case, then all you have to do is turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone to disconnect any active Bluetooth connections. Just follow these steps:
- From Home, go to Settings.
- Scroll down to and tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature off.
Forgetting or deleting any saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone is also recommended to prevent any unwanted auto-pairing. There are some instances when your iPhone would just connect to any Bluetooth-enabled devices in range. To rule this out, forget/delete all saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone with these steps:
- Select Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth to enable it and then see the list of Bluetooth connections.
- Tap the information “i” icon next to the paired device to forget the connection.
- Tap Forget this Device, and confirm action when asked to continue.
After making necessary changes, restart (soft reset) your iPhone and then make another test call to see if your phone is already ringing on incoming calls. If not, proceed to the next solution.
Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.
Incorrect settings including auto-update overrides can also be to blame when your iPhone is not ringing on incoming calls. Thus, if the problem occurs after customizing your phone’s settings or installing new updates, follow these steps to reset all settings and erase any customized options and associated errors:
- From the Home screen, go to Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and tap Reset.
- Select Reset all settings option.
- When prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Then tap the option to confirm the reset.
This process does not affect any saved data on your phone so all saved information should remain intact in your phone’s internal memory.
After the reset, your phone will reboot automatically. Once it’s back on, re-enable necessary features including Wi-Fi and cellular data. Then make a test call using other phone and see if your iPhone XR is already ringing for that call. Proceed to the next applicable solution, if your phone is still not ringing.
Sixth solution: Install new software updates, if available.
Updates are usually pushed to render solutions to existing device issues, particularly those that are inflicted by malwares and bugs. If your iPhone is not set to auto-update, then you can manually check for new updates to download and install. To get this done, your phone must be connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, has sufficient battery life and ample memory space to allocate the new update file. Then proceed to these steps whenever you’re ready:
- From your Home screen, tap Settings.
- Select General.
- Tap Software Update.
If a new iOS version is available, you will see a notification, containing details of the new update and the minimum system requirements. To instigate the updating process, simply tap Download and Install then follow the rest of the onscreen prompts to finish updating.
Reboot your iPhone after installing the update to make sure that all new system changes are properly applied. Doing so will likewise clear out any corrupt cached files and fixes apps that were acting up from the recent iOS changes.
Then try and see if that solves the problem on your iPhone XR. If your iPhone is still not ringing for incoming calls afterwards, then you may have to consider opting for full system resets.
Last resort: Reset and restore factory default settings on your iPhone XR.
Your iPhone’s calling functions might have been ruined by some fatal system errors and therefore needs more advanced solutions. And this is when performing a factory reset or master reset is considered an option. This might be the only way to fix major system errors and get the phone’s incoming call alert system back to work as intended. However, this method is only optional considering the fact that it results in permanent data loss. Should you wish to proceed and carry out this reset though, just don’t forget to back up all critical data from your iPhone storage to your iCloud account or to iTunes, if you’d prefer to erase your iPhone manually through iTunes. If you prefer iCloud backups, then you can do so and proceed right away to a factory reset through settings. Just follow these steps:
- From your Home screen, tap Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
- Choose the option to Erase all content and settings.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Then tap the option to confirm that you want to factory reset your device.
The factory reset process will then instigate. The entire process could take several minutes depending on how much data on your phone is to be erased and restored. After the reset, your phone should reboot on its own and then loads up its default settings. By then you can proceed to the initial setup process, wherein you can set features up and configure them using the start-up wizard.
Is your iPhone XR still not ringing for incoming calls?
Most, if not all software-related issues are resolved after performing a factory reset unless hardware damage is present. It’s possible that your iPhone has acquired some sort of physical or liquid damage that might have ruined some audio/sound components. As a result, sound functions of your phone including call alert tones/sounds aren’t working. To rule out hardware damage, you can take your device to the nearest Apple-authorized service center in your place for thorough hardware assessment and/or repair, if needed.
If your iPhone is still covered by warranty, then you better talk to your device provider/carrier first so you can avail for warranty instead.
