No sound problem in iOS device are often tied to hardware damage but can also be triggered by some software-related factors like random glitches on the audio/sound system. Highlighted below are generic solutions to sound problem on an iPhone XS. Feel free to refer to this walkthrough whenever you need more help fixing your iPhone that has no sound output even when not muted.
To test audio performance, open any sound-enabled apps or ring your iPhone after performing each of these subsequent solutions to find out whether or not the problem is solved. Proceed to the next applicable solution if needed.

First solution: Restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS.
Minor glitches that are randomly transpiring on your phone’s audio system are usually rectified by simply restarting your phone. Be sure to do this before resorting to more complex solutions. There’s no need to back up files beforehand since this won’t affect the internal data on your phone. Just follow these steps whenever you’re ready:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- Release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears.
- Then drag the power off slider to the right to turn off your phone.
- Wait for 30 seconds then press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.
All corrupted files stored in your phone’s memory are also cleared out after the soft reset. Once your iPhone has rebooted, check and see if audio functions are already restored.
Second solution: Disable Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone XS.
Do Not Disturb is one of the most useful features which is used to silence your iPhone on schedule or at all time. With this feature enabled, your phone won’t be able to produce sounds for incoming calls, text, and other notification alerts, unless some exceptions are set. To check and manage DND feature on your iPhone, simply follow these steps:
- From your Home screen, tap the Settings app.
- Select Do Not Disturb.
- If Do Not Disturb is enabled, tap the switch to turn the feature off.
Alternatively, you can launch the Control Center to access and manage DND settings on your iPhone XS. Here is how it’s done:
- Swipe down from the upper-right corner of your screen.
- Search for the crescent moon-like icon (DND icon) and then tap to turn the feature off.
Soft reset or restart your iPhone XS after applying the necessary changes to DND settings. Then check if the sound or audio functions are already working as intended.
Third solution: Toggle the Bluetooth feature On and Off.
Once you paired your phone to a Bluetooth accessory or device, the sound outputs will be routed the other device. This means that you won’t be hearing anything coming out from your iPhone speakers. To make sure that this is not halting your phone from producing sounds, toggle your Bluetooth on and off using these steps:
- Go to Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap the Bluetooth menu.
- Toggle the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature on or off.
- If it’s currently enabled, tap the switch to turn the Bluetooth off.
You can also delete all Bluetooth connections to avoid unnecessary automatic pairing whenever your phone is restarted. Just follow these steps to delete or forget saved Bluetooth devices from your iPhone XS:
- To get started, head on to Settings-> Bluetooth menu to view the list of Bluetooth connections.
- Then tap information (i) icon next to the name of the paired device.
- Tap Forget this device and confirm the action when prompted to continue.
- Do the same to forget the rest of the paired Bluetooth devices.
After making all these changes, reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XS then launch any sound apps to find out if the audio issue has been fixed.
Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.
Misconfigured phone settings can also be the underlying cause of audio problems including no sound. If the symptoms started after you configured your phone settings, then it’s possible that you have entered incorrect values or modified certain options. In that case, you need to revert the changes to correct the problem. But if you are unsure of which options to change, then you better erase all customized settings instead. To do this, simply reset all settings on your phone using these steps:
- From the Home screen, open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
- Select Reset all settings option.
- When prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Then tap Reset all settings again to confirm the action.
Your phone will reboot automatically after the reset. Once it boots up again, enable the necessary features including Wi-Fi to reconnect to the Internet and use online services. Don’t forget to perform a sound test to see if the problem is gone. If your iPhone still has no sound, then you need to troubleshoot further.
Fifth solution: Update your iPhone XS to the latest iOS version available.
Stubborn bugs and malwares that might have ruined the phone’s audio functions can be dealt with by updating your iPhone software to the latest version. Software updates that are periodically rolled are not only designed to enhance phone features but also provide dedicated fix patches to get rid of various phone issues including those affecting the sound/audio functions. Just follow these steps to manually check for and install the latest software update available for your iPhone XS:
- From your Home screen, tap the Settings app.
- Select General.
- Then tap the Software Update menu.
A notification of an iOS update will appear if a new version is available. Read and review the software update information then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the update file. Be sure to back up your data beforehand for safekeeping purposes.
Alternatively, you can also do a manual update check using iTunes. This option will require the use of a computer with an operating system that’s compatible with your iPhone XS and has latest iTunes version installed in it. If you wish to try this method, then you can just refer to these steps:
- Connect your iPhone XS to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable.
- Launch iTunes on your computer and wait for it to check for available software updates.
- Then tap Download and Update when prompted with a new iOS version for your iPhone.
- Then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the software update on your iPhone.
Once the update is completely installed, your iPhone should reboot automatically. If it doesn’t restart on its own, then you should trigger it to reboot/soft reset. Restarting the phone after updating is imperative to ensure that the recent system changes are properly implemented. Doing so will also refresh your apps and system functions, and thereby prevents them from acting up after the system transition.
