Troubleshooting iPhone XS Max that play notifications in silent mode

Before you start performing the following procedures, try to toggle the ringer switch up and down. Make sure it’s positioned to mute to ensure that audio functions and sound outputs of your iPhone are turned off. After muting your device, place a test call on your iPhone or send a sample message using a different phone to see if you still hear the notifications for incoming calls and text messages. If the notifications still play, move on and try these procedures.

First solution: Restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max.

The first possible triggers to rule out are minor software errors and app glitches on the phone. These are usually the main cause of abnormal app behaviours on the device. And the simplest yet very effective solution to the problem is a soft reset or reboot on your iPhone XS Max. Junk files that are stored among other cached data are likewise cleared out in the process, thus your iPhone’s performance is improved. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release the buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to turn off the phone.
  4. After at least 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

Creating a back-up of all the files you saved on the phone, won’t be necessary as this reset will not result in permanent data loss. Once your phone has completely booted up, check if it still produces sound notifications in silent mode. If it still does, then proceed to the next method to eliminate other triggers.

Second solution: Manage the ringer and alerts on

Normally, the notification alerts are turned off when your iPhone is muted. But when software bugs and glitches strike, they could drastically alter the current settings on your phone and eventually switches the phone back to ring mode. As a result, it seems to you that your iPhone is acting strange. To deal with these unexpected or unknown changes, try to access your phone’s settings and then adjust the ringer and alerts control. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to and tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the left to decrease the volume level until it’s silenced.

In the event when the volume is currently set to its lowest level, drag the slider to the right and then back to the left again to reduce the volume. This trick has done wonders to many people so it can be worth a shot.

Third solution: Check and configure Do Not Disturb (DND) settings on your iPhone XS Max.

DND feature is designed to mute sounds, alerts and notifications on your contacts and apps when your screen is locked, at some time durations, or at all times. If your iPhone still plays sound notifications with DND enabled, then you must haven’t configured the setting to apply to all apps. To check on this, access your iPhone’s DND settings and make necessary changes:

  1. From the Home screen, open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to and select Do Not Disturb.
  3. Toggle the Do Not Disturb switch to turn it on, if necessary.

Alternatively, you can also launch the Control Center on your iPhone to enable the Do Not Disturb feature. Here’s how:

  1. Swipe down from the upper-right corner of your phone screen to open the Control Center.
  2. Search for the Do Not Disturb icon (crescent moon) and then tap to enable the feature.
  3. Then tap the screen to close the Control Center.

A crescent moon icon will show up on the status bar when the Do Not Disturb feature is enabled on your phone. All notification alerts should then be muted unless some exceptions are set to certain apps.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS Max.

Misconfigured or incorrect settings can also be the main cause of this problem. This is often the case after installing a software update that’s programmed to override current settings on the receiving device. To clear this out, simply delete all customized settings and then restore the default configurations on your iPhone XS Max. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, open the Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Select Reset all Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode, if prompted to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset all Settings again to confirm the reset.

All saved information on your phone’s internal memory will remain intact after the reset, so creating a back-up beforehand won’t be necessary. After the reset, your phone restarts automatically and then loads up the original values and options. To see if the problem is fixed, try to send a sample message or place a test call to your iPhone. If the notifications for calls and texts are still audible, double check the ringer switch and the volume controls. Make sure that the switch is set to mute and the volume controls to the lowest level.

Fifth solution: Update iOS to the latest version available.

Updating the software version of your iPhone might also help fix the problem especially if it’s inflicted by a system bug or malware. Software updates released by Apple not only provide new features and system enhancements but also embed some bugs fixes that are designed to obliterate stubborn bugs and malware that might have ruined the phone’s audio or notification system. Before updating, be sure to back up all your critical files so you’d still be able to recover them later.. A stable internet connection, at least 50 % battery life and sufficient memory space on your iPhone are also needed to install software update. Here’s how to check for over-the-air (OTA) updates to install on your iPhone XS Max:

  1. Open the Settings app from Home.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Then tap on Software Update menu.

An update notification will then show up if a new software update or iOS version is available. Just follow the onscreen instructions to start downloading and installing the update on your phone.  After the update is completely installed, restart (soft reset) your iPhone to refresh the system and to apply the recent software changes.

After your phone reboots, do the same tests to see if the notifications are already working as intended.

Still hearing notifications playing on your iPhone XS Max even when in silent mode?

The problem might be triggered by some complex system errors or stubborn malwares and bugs that it managed to persist up to this point. To eliminate complex system errors from the underlying causes, you may resort to a factory reset, recovery mode restore or DFU mode restore via iTunes. These are usually deemed among the last possible solutions to try on if all else failed to resolve a software issue on the phone. But before you do, be sure to back up your files from the iPhone to iCloud or iTunes so as not to end up losing them permanently. Note that these methods wipe everything from your iPhone system including your downloads and personal files saved on the internal storage.
