How to fix iPhone XR that cannot set up email account, email setup error

Setting up an email account is one of the first few things you’ll need to do when getting a hold of a new smartphone. In iOS devices, getting an email set up is never this easy as you can do it automatically. All you have to do is to add your existing email address and password or simply create a new one. Nonetheless, there are also some factors that make such a simple process more complicated. 

Often times, software bugs and in-app glitches are the main hindrances. In this article, you’ll find some simple solutions and workarounds that are used to resolve an issue on the iPhone XR that cannot set up email account. Read on to learn what to do if you’re getting an email set up error when attempting to set email on your iPhone XR.

Troubleshooting iPhone XR that can’t set up email account

Before you start ruling out software-related factors, make sure that you have a stable internet connection on your iPhone. A stable Internet connection is required for your device to sync with the email server (webmail) and to carry out email requests. If there’s no problem with your Internet connection, then you can go ahead and start ruling out every possible culprit using these subsequent solutions.

First solution: Soft reset your iPhone XR.

Rebooting or performing a soft reset on your iPhone XR will clear unwanted cache and refresh your phone’s memory. If this is the first time you try setting up your email, doing a reboot will also clear minor bugs on software. Here are the steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either of the Volume Button at the side of your phone for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off appears on your screen, release both buttons.
  3. Slide the Power off command to the right to turn off the phone.
  4. Wait for about 30 seconds then press and hold the Side Button until you see the Apple logo.

Log into your email account via webmail after rebooting your phone. To do so, open your browser app then go to your email provider’s website. Use the same email address and password as the one you’re trying to set up on your iPhone XR to sign in, then see if you can log in successfully. If you’re able to log in through webmail, try setting up your email account on your iPhone XR and make sure to enter the correct email address and password. 

You can also delete the other email accounts from your iPhone XR, if you have any. Doing so will prevent any of your other email accounts from causing conflicts with your default email account. After deleting unwanted email accounts, retry setting up your new email account in the Mail app using automatic settings. If this procedure still failed to fix the problem and that you’re still getting an email setup error, proceed to the next solution.

Second solution: Reset your email account password.

An incorrect password you entered is also one of the main reasons as to why many people are getting errors when setting up email accounts on their respective devices. Having said that, check and ensure that the password entered for your email account is correct. You can manually reset the email password on your iPhone XR if necessary. Simply follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, access Settings.
  2. Scroll down then select Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Select your email account.
  4. Tap Account to proceed.
  5. Go to Password section below the Incoming Mail Server.
  6. Delete the old password then type in your new password.
  7. Select Done to save changes.

After the password reset, set up your email account on your iPhone XR Mail app then enter the new password.

You can also make sure that your account server settings are correct. You can check and compare the account information settings shown in the Mail versus the actual settings for your email account via Mail Settings Lookup tool. You can also contact your email provider or your system administrator to get the information.  After accumulating the correct server information, you can manually configure your email account server settings with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, access Settings.
  2. Scroll down then select Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Select your email account.
  4. Tap your email address beside Account then review account details including incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Just make sure that the server settings on the Mail app matches with your provider’s email server settings.

Third solution: Refresh your Internet connection.

Turning your Wi-Fi off and on provides a refresh on internet connection by removing Internet errors and glitches. Here are some tweaks for your reference.

Toggle the Wi-Fi switch off and on:

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi menu, then toggle the Wi-Fi switch to Off. Wait for a few seconds then switch it back on. 

Enable/disable Airplane mode:

  1. Access Settings > Airplane Mode menu.
  2. Toggle the switch to turn Airplane Mode On. This will disable all your wireless connections including Wi-Fi.
  3. Restart or soft reset your iPhone XS max while Airplane mode is turned on.
  4. After rebooting the phone, go back to Settings > Airplane Mode and turn it Off.

Enabling Airplane mode disables all wireless connections on your phone including Wi-Fi. Bluetooth and cellular data networks simultaneously. Disabling Airplane mode on the other hand, turns these features back on and will refresh all wireless radios and relevant features. 

Fourth solution: Update phone to the latest software version.

Updating your phone’s operating system to the latest iOS version can also be considered among the possible solutions given that iOS updates typically provide fix patches that are necessary to fix and eliminate bugs and software glitches on the receiving device. You can easily download and install these updates wirelessly/OTA (over-the-air) through your iPhone settings or manually, through iTunes on a computer. The best way to do it if your iPhone has stable access to the internet is via OTA. Just make sure that your phone has 50% battery life and sufficient memory space to allocate the update file. Then proceed to these steps whenever you’re ready to update your phone:

  1. From your Home screen, access Settings.
  2. Scroll down to General.
  3. Select Software Update.

If there’s an available software update, read the update information then tap the option to Download and install. Just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Once everything is finished, restart your phone to refresh the system and to implement the recent platform changes and fix patches.

Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

Incorrect configuration settings can also cause issue on setting up your email account. Customized settings might have enabled or disabled important options and resulted to conflicts and errors on your email account setup. To fix this, you can reset all settings to revert it to the default configuration. Here’s how:

  1. Access Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down and select Reset.
  4. Tap Reset all Settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode once asked.
  6. Select the option to confirm all settings reset.

After the reset, your iPhone will restart automatically. Just let it boot up completely and then set up your Wi-Fi network to reconnect to the Internet and use online services, particularly email services.

Performing a factory reset may also be deemed among other advanced solutions to try on if none of the aforementioned procedures is able to fix the problem on your iPhone XR. A factory reset will delete all saved data from your iPhone and restores it to the default factory settings.
