Troubleshooting iPhone XR with delayed touchscreen response

Before you begin to troubleshoot your device, check its current memory status and make sure it has ample of storage space available. Insufficient memory is also the main factor that causes your iPhone to slow down. Thus, it must be ruled out beforehand. If the available space is less than a gigabyte, then that’s a clear indication that you need to free up some space as your iPhone’s memory is already shrinking. When the iPhone’s memory is running low, various performance issues can be triggered from sluggishness to random system crashes, unexpected boot loops and unresponsive display. If there’s still plenty of storage left on your iPhone XR and yet the delayed touchscreen response symptom continues, then you may go ahead and try these subsequent procedures.

First solution: Clear all the background apps then soft reset your iPhone XR to fix delayed touchscreen issue.

Apps that are left running in the background for quite some time are prone to getting rogue especially when they crashed or became corrupted. When this happens, various symptoms can be triggered not only on a certain feature but on the entire system functions. To make sure this isn’t causing you this trouble, clear out or end all the background apps on your phone with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe your finger up and then pause.
  2. Swipe left or right to search through apps preview.
  3. Then swipe up on an app preview to close it. Do the same to the remaining running apps.

After closing all the running apps, restart (soft reset) your iPhone to clear out cached files and to refresh its internal memory. To soft reset an iPhone XR, simply refer to these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off command appears, release both buttons.
  3. Then drag the power off slider to the right to completely turn off your iPhone.
  4. After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

In the event where your screen is no longer responding to touches, performing a forced restart would be necessary. It is a simulated battery-removal procedure that is used to forcibly shut down and reboot a frozen device. This can be done using the hardware keys on your iPhone. Just refer to these steps whenever you’re ready:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  3. Then press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Wait until your phone has booted up completely. Then test your phone to see if the delayed touch screen response issue has already been resolved.

Second solution: Install pending apps updates and latest iOS version when available.

Updating the apps on your phone is imperative. Not only that it will enhance the app’s features but also provides fixes for existing bugs that are commonly present and causing problems on an out-dated application. If haven’t configured your iPhone XR to implement auto-updates, then follow these steps to manually check for pending app updates to download and install via App Store:

  1. From the Home screen, select App Store.
  2. Scroll down to and tap on Updates tab to view the list of apps with pending updates.
  3. Then tap the Update button next to the app’s name to install its corresponding update.
  4. Otherwise, tap the Update All button located on the upper-right corner to install all apps updates at once.

After installing all the pending apps updates, proceed to check on any available iOS update for your iPhone XR. Software updates that are periodically rolled out by Apple usually provide fix patches that are programmed to clear out software-related issues including delayed touch screen response inflicted by system bugs.

The primary requirements to install app updates on your iPhone XR would include an excellent internet connection, enough battery life (at least 50%), and ample memory space. Once you have met all these requisites, proceed to these steps to check for iOS update available for your iPhone XR:

  1. Go to Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Then tap Software Update.

You will be prompted with an update notification if a new iOS version is available. Just follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the new iOS update then.

Wait for your phone to finish updating and once it’s done, reboot (soft reset) your phone to ensure that all new system changes are properly implemented. Doing so will likewise refresh apps and your phone’s operating system.

Third solution: Reset all settings to fix iPhone XR with delayed touchscreen response problem.

Invalid configurations on your phone may also trigger different symptoms including lags and other performance issues. In case the problem started to manifest after you update or customize the settings on your iPhone, then try to retrieve the original or default values by carrying out the following procedures:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings from the options.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset all settings again to confirm the reset.

Your phone will reboot automatically after the reset. Once it is turned back on, original values and options are restored. This denotes the need for you to re-enable necessary features so you can use them again on your iPhone. Then try to use your device as you normally do and see if the delayed touchscreen problem is gone.

Fourth solution: Perform a master/factory reset on your iPhone XR.

Master reset or factory reset is usually deemed as the last option to correct most complicated system errors and stubborn symptoms. But you have to note though that this process will not only wipe out complex bugs and malwares but also your important files saved on your iPhone’s internal memory. If you wish to proceed, don’t forget to create a back-up for your phone files beforehand so you won’t lose them permanently. You can carry out a master reset/factory reset straight from settings if your iPhone screen is still able to respond. Just follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, open the Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Select Erase all content and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm the master/factory reset.

Alternatively, you can perform a factory reset/master reset via iTunes. This would be an option if your phone becomes totally unresponsive to touch input commands.

To perform a master reset using iTunes, you need to have a computer with an OS that is compatible with your iPhone XR and has the latest iTunes version installed on it. If these requisites are met, then get started with iTunes factory reset:

  1. On your computer, open the iTunes app.
  2. Connect your iPhone XR to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable.
  3. Click on Trust This Computer if prompted or enter your device passcode. Then follow the onscreen prompts or instructions to continue.
  4. Select the name of your iPhone XR once it shows up in iTunes.
  5. Navigate through the Summary section then click on the Restore button.
  6. Read the warning prompts and follow the onscreen instructions for iTunes to initiate the factory reset and download the new iOS version for your iPhone.

The process could take some time to complete, so be sure not to do anything on your phone or computer to prevent any possible interruptions.

Still experiencing delayed touchscreen response on your iPhone XR?

The problem that persists even after restoring iOS in iTunes is more likely attributed to hardware damage. It’s possible that your iPhone XR has obtained some damage to its display or screen components and the reason why touchscreen inputs are recognized late. To rule this out, you can take your device to the nearest Apple-authorized service center and ask an iPhone technical to run some tests to evaluate the hardware, particularly those that are within the display circuit.

You can also try using some third-party iOS repair and recovery tools that work closely similar to iTunes. Download and install a software of your choice, connect your iPhone to the computer just like what you do when using iTunes, and then launch the iOS repair software to start repairing your iPhone XR system.

For other options and recommendations, report the problem to your iPhone provider or escalate the problem straight to Apple Support. If your iPhone warranty is still valid, then availing for service warranty or new unit replacement can be considered as final option.
