How to fix iPhone X that is overheating after iOS 13

Overheating is a common symptom users are experiencing on a day-to-day basis on their iOS devices. Most users tend to overuse their devices to the extent that they are using it while charging, playing music while gaming. These are actually bad habits users must quit from doing. Not only these will cause phone’s battery to quickly drain, but likewise triggers  phone’s temperature to rise. Thus, overheating emerges.

Troubleshooting iPhone X that is overheating after iOS 13

Overheating is one of the many post-update errors users have encountered after installing iOS 13. Listed below are the common triggers and their corresponding solutions that you can use as references whenever your iPhone X device overheats after iOS 13. Read on.

First solution: Quit all running apps in the background to fix iPhone X that is overheating after iOS 13.

Apps that are left running in the background can cause your phone to misbehave.  Not only the apps themselves get corrupted, it will also affect the overall performance of your iOS device. In whatever circumstances, make it a habit to close unused apps to prevent symptoms to occur, including overheating. To close or quit these running apps from the background, follow these steps: 

  1. From the Home screen, swipe your finger upward and then pause.
  2. Swipe left or right to navigate through the app previews.
  3. Swipe up an app preview to close it individually.
  4. Do the same to the rest of the running background apps.

Closing all the running apps may not be enough to prevent overheating to recur. Phone apps that have been set to automatically refresh whenever cellular or Wi-Fi internet is available can trigger your battery to drain quickly and therefore, will cause overheating. To rule this out, disable Background App Refresh option on the settings menu. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings, from Home.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select Background App Refresh and tap the switch to turn it off.

After closing all the background apps and disabling the Background App Refresh option, restart (soft reset) your iPhone X. Here is how:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume Up/Down button simultaneously.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off command appears, release both buttons.
  3. Then drag the power off slider to turn off your iPhone device.
  4. After at least 30 seconds, turn on your iPhone again. To do so, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Wait until your phone finished booting up. Then try to open an app and use it like you normally do. Observe if the overheating issue has been fixed. If not, move on to the next troubleshooting guide.

Second solution: Check your phone apps battery usage and uninstall bad apps to fix overheating after iOS 13 on your iPhone X.

Apps that are consuming more power (battery) are referred to as bad apps. These apps will more likely to cause your phone’s battery to drain quickly and eventually triggers overheating. To check the battery usage details on your device, head to Settings->Battery->Battery usage->Show Activity. Once you have identified the apps that are consuming more power than normal, delete or uninstall the apps. Deleting apps can be done from the main screen or through the settings menu. If you prefer the latter option, here’s how:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Tap on iPhone Storage menu.
  4. Scroll down to the list of apps to select.
  5. Tap the name of the app and select Delete App to delete/uninstall the app. Then follow the onscreen prompts to confirm the deletion.
  6. Do the same to the rest of the bad apps.

After deleting all the bad and unnecessary apps, restart (soft reset) your iPhone X to completely dump out cache files from the bad apps and to refresh your phone’s operating system. Then check if your iPhone X is no longer overheating.

Third solution: Check for and install pending apps updates.

To maintain your phone apps stability, make sure to regularly check for and install apps updates. A manual checking is necessary in case you haven’t set your phone for automatic updates. Here’s how:

  1. From Home, launch the App Store.
  2. Select your profile icon located on the top corner of the screen.
  3. Navigate through the Updates section to see the list of pending apps updates. If you see no updates at all, swipe your finger downward to refresh the screen. By then, pending apps updates will be populated whenever available.
  4. Tap Update next to the app’s name to update the app.
  5. Otherwise, select Update All to install all pending apps updates at once.

Wait until your phone has finished installing the apps updates. Then restart (soft reset) your iPhone X  for proper implementation of the recently updated apps. Afterwards, use the apps and check if your iOS 13 iPhone X is no longer overheating. If is still does, try the next applicable methods.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone X to fix overheating issue.

Clearing all invalid system settings that might have transpired after the iOS update can be of help in fixing overheating issue on your iOS device. There might be some values and options that were automatically changed and triggers your phone to overheat. To reset all settings on your device, here’s what needs to be done:

  1. From the Home screen, open the Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Select Reset all settings from the given options.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode and then continue.
  6. Lastly, select the option to confirm all settings reset on your iPhone X device.

Your phone will reboot by itself once the reset is done, and restores the system settings to default. Re-enable necessary features to use them again.

Fifth solution: Check for iOS updates.

As we have noticed, Apple released follow up iOS updates after iOS 13, and one of these updates may contain fixes and patches for overheating issue on iOS 13. For instance, iOS 13.1.1 can help fix this issue as this version particularly provides fixes for phones with batteries that drain quickly. To check for and install this iOS version, use these steps:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Software Update. Once prompted with the available updates, review the details of each iOS version. If iOS 13.1.1 is available, select this version and follow the onscreen prompts to download and install. 

Wait until the installation process is done. If your phone won’t turn off by itself as expected, you can restart (soft reset) your iOS device. This is to ensure that the new iOS update will be properly implemented. 

Sixth solution: Restore your phone to factory default settings.

If your iPhone X is still overheating after performing the potential solutions mapped out above, you can start wiping everything out from your phone’s system to allow a clean iOS install. Doing so will clear out major software glitches that is causing your phone to overheat. Thus, causing a complete data loss. To secure all your critical files, make sure to back them up to either iCloud or iTunes. Once done, proceed restoring your phone to factory default settings using these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, select Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Reset.
  4. Then select option Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted, and then continue.
  6. Then select the option to confirm the factory reset.

Wait until the factory reset process is done. 

What if the iPhone X is still overheating up to this point?

If none of the given solutions was able to fix the overheating issue on your iOS device, you can troubleshoot your phone further. Restoring your iOS in recovery mode and DFU mode are among the most advanced-solutions in fixing the problem.
