How to fix email setup error on your Apple iPhone XR, cannot set up email account

While you can always use web-based email to send and receive email messages, it is but still better to use an email client as it allows you to manage your emails while on the go for as long as your device is connected to the Internet. To get started, you will need to set up your email on your phone first.

If for some reason, you cannot set up an email account on your iPhone XR and halted with errors, then you have to try some means to correct these errors and solve the problem. This post highlights basic yet effective solutions to email setup issues on iOS 12 devices, particularly the new iPhone XR handset. Read on for more information.

What prevents you from setting up email account on your iPhone?

There are a lot of factors that can halt you from setting up your email account. Among the usual culprits are network connectivity issues, server downtimes and errors, incorrect/invalid email account information, and misconfigured settings on the phone. Generally, the underlying causes are attributed to the software and therefore possible to fix at home.

Before you begin to troubleshoot, make sure that your iPhone has stable Internet connection. If your device is experiencing any sort of network connectivity problems from slow browsing to intermittent or no Internet connection at all, then that’s what you need to deal with first. Your device must be able to access your email server to sync email information. If the Internet isn’t stable, then there’s a higher chance that the email syncing process couldn’t be completed. Another thing that you need to check is the status of your webmail server. Make sure that you can access your email through webmail. To do this, open your webmail through a browser and then sign into the same email account using the correct email address and password information. If you’re able to log into your email through webmail, then you should be able to set up the email account on your iPhone, unless something isn’t configured properly on your device.

If you have set up other email accounts on your device, then try to delete them first. This is to ensure that they won’t cause conflict with the email account you’re trying to set up.

  • To delete existing email accounts from your iPhone XR, simply go to Settings-> Passwords & Accounts menu. Once you get there, navigate to the Accounts section and tap to select the email account you want to delete. Tap the option to Delete Account , then tap Delete from My iPhone to confirm.

If you’re prompted with an error message when trying to set up the email on your phone, read and review the message as it usually gives you clues on what went wrong and what needs to be done to correct it. Otherwise, you’ve got to try individual solutions as follow.

First solution: Reboot your iPhone XR.

If this is the first attempt you’ve made and it didn’t go through, try to restart your phone first. Doing so will eliminate minor software glitches that might have caused the email system to fail. So consider this as your first solution to try on:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Release the buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears and then drag the power off slider to the right.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power/Side button again until the iPhone reboots.

Wait until your phone is finished rebooting and then retry setting up your email and see if it’s already working.

Second solution: Refresh your Internet connection.

Again, you need to rule out network connectivity issues from the underlying cause. The easiest and simplest way to do this is to refresh your phone’s internet connection. There are many ways to do this. If you can access your wireless router/modem, then rebooting the equipment can be considered an option to refresh your Internet connection. Or you can also use the Wi-Fi toggle on your iPhone XR.

  • To restart and refresh Wi-Fi on your iPhone, go to Settings-> Wi-Fi menu, then tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn it OFF. After a few seconds, tap the switch again to turn Wi-Fi back ON.

Alternatively, you can use the Airplane Mode tweak. It works by enabling Airplane mode shortly and then disabling it again. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
  2. Select Airplane Mode and then tap the switch to turn the feature ON. Doing so disables the phone’s wireless radios and relevant functions including Wi-Fi.
  3. While Airplane Mode is turned ON, restart or soft reset your iPhone XR to clear out random software glitches that caused minor connectivity issues.
  4. After the phone restarts, go back to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu and then toggle the switch to turn Airplane Mode OFF again.

Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and once connected, retry setting up your email account.

Third solution: Set up the email account manually.

There are two ways for you to set up an email account on your iPhone XR and that would include automatic and manual email setup. Often times, people would go for automatic email setup because everything will be processed by the email software. That said, you wouldn’t have to type in key information like the email server settings for incoming and outgoing server, port numbers to use, and other relevant information. However, there are some instances when automatic email settings would lead to errors and the email setup couldn’t finish. This is when manual setup would become necessary.

But before you proceed, you will need to ready the correct server settings, port numbers, and other necessary information. If you don’t know of this, then you need to contact your email service provider first. Once you have the information ready, follow these steps to start setting up your email account manually:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap Mail.
  3. Select Passwords & Accounts.
  4. Tap Add Account…
  5. Select your email provider from the list.
  6. Enter necessary details including your email address, password, server settings, port settings and other relevant information into their respective fields.
  7. Then tap Next to continue.
  8. If you prefer, choose to sync other options like Contacts and Calendars by marking the checkbox.
  9. Then tap Save to apply the recent changes.

Fourth solution: Reset your email password in webmail.

If you’re able to login to your email using webmail but can’t set it up on your phone, try to reset your password. You can use the same password or create a different one. To change your email password, you will need to log into your email account through webmail. That means you have to log into your email using a browser.

After changing your password, try setting up the email account on your iPhone XR using email software client and see if it’s successful.

Most email clients are programmed to tell you exactly what’s wrong the moment you start them up. Hence, if it’s telling you to enter the correct password, then you will have to do so.

Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone.

Incorrect settings on the phone may also cause conflict and therefore caused email setup process to fail. To rule this out, reset all settings on your phone to erase all customized settings and to restore the default options and values. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset all settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset settings to confirm.

Wait for your phone to reboot when the reset is finished. After that, you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network in order to get back online and use online apps and services.

Sixth solution: Erase your iPhone and set it up as new.

As your last resort, you may consider performing a factory reset on your iPhone XR. This may be necessary to clear out complex system issues or settings errors that halted you from adding new email account on your phone. It will also allow you to set up your email as new using the account setup wizard. But before you do, back up all your important data to iCloud or iTunes, as they will also be deleted in the process. Once your backup is secured, proceed with these steps to erase your iPhone XR and restore its factory defaults through settings:

  1. From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap Erase iPhone to confirm.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to factory reset your iPhone XR on a computer. This can be considered an option if you wish to back up your iPhone files to a computer drive instead of iCloud. To get started, you will need to secure a computer that has the latest version of iTunes and stable Internet connection. Once you have it ready, connect your iPhone XR using the supplied USB cable and wait for it to sync with iTunes. Once connected, all you have to do is click on the given command buttons and controls to instigate iPhone reset.

Once the reset is finish, you can proceed with the initial setup process. Just follow the setup wizard to set up everything in your phone automatically, including your email account.

Still couldn’t set up email on your iPhone XR?

If you’ve gone through all the aforementioned procedures and still couldn’t get your email account to work on your iPhone XR, then you should contact your email service provider or carrier so they can assist you further. There may be some advanced settings that need to be configured to get your email added into your phone. They can also walk you through the entire email setup process using some additional tools on their end.
