How to fix iPhone XS that cannot make calls after iOS 13?
When users cannot make phone calls on their devices, the first thing they usually do is contact their service network provider for assistance. But if you think your payment is up-to-date and the problem isn’t account-related, calling your network provider should be your last resort. If you have ample time to deal with the issue, see the easy-to-do steps we have listed below to fix iPhone XS cannot make calls after iOS 13.
First solution: Check network coverage then toggle the Airplane Mode on and off again.
Check the signal strength you are getting from the carrier network’s tower on the top of your phone screen. If it shows minimal to zero signal bars, turn the Airplane Mode on and off again to refresh your phone’s wireless radios and services. Here are the steps:
- Go to Settings from your Home screen.
- Select Airplane Mode.
- Toggle the switch to turn the feature on.
- Reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XS while Airplane Mode is enabled.
- Then head back to Settings->Airplane Mode and then toggle the switch to turn the feature back off.
Barriers like walls, trees, and buildings can also affect the signal strength that you are getting from the tower, so make sure that you are in the area wherein you can get a stable signal for your iPhone device.
Second solution: Perform a carrier settings update.
This method will require you to have internet access. Once your cellular data is enabled or you’re connected to a wireless network, follow the steps below to carry out carrier settings update on your iPhone XS device:
- From Home, select Settings.
- Tap General.
- Then select About. A pop-up message will show up when a carrier settings update is available. Simply follow the onscreen instructions to install the update.
Carrier settings updates are oftentimes automatically installed by the service network providers on every user’s device. Doing so will enhance phone’s network services, so as to get rid of random glitches. But in case it hasn’t been done that way, then manually installing it using the steps above can be of help.
Third solution: Reset network settings.
If you’re still unable to make phone calls after installing carrier settings update on your iPhone device, try restoring your network settings to default. Doing so will delete erratic network settings caused by the new system update and triggered the outbound calling problem to emerge. Here’s what needs to be done:
- Go to Settings from Home.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and tap Reset.
- Select Reset network settings option.
- When prompted, enter your device passcode and then continue.
- Then select the option to confirm the network settings reset.
Wait until your phone completely boots up after the reset. If needed, enable your Wi-Fi to use the feature again. Then try making phone calls from your phone to check if it is already working. If still you cannot make phone calls after resetting the network settings to default, try the next option.
Fourth solution: Remove and then reinsert your SIM card.
Your phone is able to connect to available network through the use of SIM card. Once connected to a network, this lets you use all the features on your phone, including making phone calls. Thus, the outbound calling function will be interrupted if the SIM card has been dislodged, not properly installed, or is physically damaged. Being said, we recommend checking your SIM card by removing it from the SIM card slot. If there are no signs of physical damage like scratches, insert it back to the SIM card tray. If you haven’t done this before, here are the steps:
- Turn off your iPhone XS.
- While your phone is off, insert the SIM eject tool or a paper clip into the hole beside the SIM card tray.
- When you hear a click sound, gently pull the SIM card tray from your phone and then remove the SIM card.
- Check the SIM card for scratches and make sure that it is clean. When you see nothing on the SIM card and it is in perfect condition, put the SIM card back to the tray and make sure that it is properly installed.
- Then gently push the SIM card tray back into your phone until it’s locked in.
Then turn your phone back on and check if you are already able to make calls.
Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS to factory default settings. (factory/master reset)
Tough bugs are usually to blame if the problem still persists up to this far. Thus, a more-advanced solution should be carried out this time. A factory reset is deemed to effectively fix issues triggered by fatal bugs, but will also cause data loss on your phone. Being said, we advise to back-up your phone with either iCloud or iTunes beforehand to secure your files. Then proceed to restore your phone to factory default settings using these steps:
- Select Settings from your Home screen.
- Select General.
- Scroll to and tap on Reset.
- Then select Erase all content and settings.
- Enter your device passcode to when prompted.
- Then select the option to confirm the full system reset.
Your phone will reboot automatically after the factory reset. Once it is back on, follow the onscreen instructions to set up your phone as new again. Don’t forget to check your phone’s calling features afterwards to make sure that the issue has been resolved.
Escalate the issue
If the issue can no longer be corrected on your end even after performing all the solutions provided above, escalate the issue to your service network provider. There might be an on-going service outage in your area affecting outgoing calls. They can also verify if indeed, this isn’t an account-related issue. Just provide them detailed information to when the problem started and what have you done so far to fix the issue.
