How to fix an iPhone XS Max that has no sound

No sound and other audio problems in smartphones are often attributed to hardware damage like damaged speakers, microphones, and other audio components. But there are also some cases wherein software-related factors are the underlying causes.

Troubleshooting iPhone XS Max that has no sound

Before taking your iPhone to an Apple Genius bar, it’s recommended to rule out software-related factors with these subsequent procedures. Don’t forget to test your iPhone’s audio output after performing each method to find out whether or not the no sound problem is resolved.

First solution: Restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max.

Soft reset or iPhone restart is usually used as the first workaround when facing random issues with their phones, particularly those that are attributed to minor software glitches. If this is the first time that your iPhone lost audio outputs, try to apply the steps below to eliminate minor glitches, to clear out corrupt audio caches and to refresh your device:

  1. Simultaneously press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons for a few seconds.
  2. When the Slide to Power Off command appears, release the buttons.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to completely power off the phone.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds then press and hold the Side/Power button again until the Apple logo appears.

Wait until your phone completes its bootup sequence and then open any sound-enabled app to check the sound or audio is already working as intended.

Second solution: Disable the Do Not Disturb (DND) feature on your iPhone XS Max.

If the Do Not Disturb feature is enabled on your iPhone, notifications sound alerts for incoming calls, messages, and app updates are silenced or muted. As a result, you won’t be able to hear your iPhone sound for these alerts unless exceptions are set. To eliminate this from the possible culprits, head over to your phone settings then turn off Do Not Disturb. Here is how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Settings app.
  2. Select Do Not Disturb.
  3. If the Do Not Disturb switch is highlighted, it means the feature is enabled. Toggle the switch to turn the feature off.

Alternatively, you can also launch the Control Center on your iPhone to manage the DND settings. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Swipe down from the upper-right corner of your iPhone screen to launch the Control Center.
  2. Find the crescent moon-like icon (Do Not Disturb icon), and then tap on it to turn the feature off.

Reboot (soft reset) your phone after modifying the DND feature on your iPhone. Then check if your phone’s audio/sound outputs are restored.

Third solution: Manage the Ringer and Alerts settings on your iPhone XS Max.

If the Ringer and Alert volume on your iPhone is too low, calls, alerts and notifications could not be heard or easily noticed. That said, you need to adjust and increase the volume level of the Ringer and Alerts sound on your phone.

  • To do this, press the Volume Up button on the side of your phone or drag the volume slider to the right through the Control Center.

Alternatively, you can adjust the Ringer and Alerts sound through your phone’s settings. Here is how:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to and select Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right to increase its volume level.

After increasing the Ringer and Alerts volume level, check some apps and see if the sound is already audible.

Fourth solution: Disconnect Bluetooth accessory and disable the Bluetooth feature on your iPhone XS Max.

Whenever your phone is paired with any Bluetooth-enabled devices, the audio output is bypassed or routed to its paired Bluetooth device. This means that you won’t be hearing anything on your iPhone until the paired accessory is disconnected or Bluetooth is turned off. In this case, all you have to do is turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone to disconnect it from any Bluetooth-enabled accessory or sound device. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down to and tap Bluetooth.
  3. Toggle the Bluetooth switch/indicator to disable the feature.

You can also forget or delete all Bluetooth connections on your iPhone XS Max. To do so:

  1. Go to Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Bluetooth menu to see the list of paired Bluetooth accessories.
  3. Tap the information “i” icon next to the paired device to delete or forget the connection.
  4. Then tap the Forget this Device option.
  5. Confirm action when asked to continue.

After making the necessary changes, restart (soft reset) your iPhone XS Max. Then open any sound-enabled app and check if you hear your iPhone sound already.

Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS Max.

Audio functions can also be affected when you’ve customized the settings in a way that caused some conflicts to the standard or default audio settings. If the no sound problem started after modifying settings on your device, then you should try reverting the changes. And this is when resetting all settings on your iPhone XS Max is recommended. Performing this reset will erase recent customized settings and then restores the original values or default system configurations. This reset does not affect any critical data saved on your phone’s internal memory, so there’s no need to create backups. If you wish to give it a shot, refer to these steps to reset all settings on your iPhone XS Max:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap the Reset option.
  4. Then select Reset all settings from the given options.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset all settings again to confirm the reset.

Your iPhone will restart automatically after the reset. Once the phone is finished rebooting, enable necessary features including Wi-Fi so you can use them again. Also check and ensure that the volume is set to an audible level. Then launch a sound-enabled app and check if the problem is solved.

Still not hearing sounds from your iPhone XS Max?

If your iPhone still has no sound, then that’s when you consider opting for full system resets and iOS restore. There might be some complex system errors that ruined the phone’s audio functions and required more advanced solutions.

At this point, your next option would be a factory reset. This will erase everything from your device along with complex system errors that caused stubborn audio symptoms. Just don’t forget to back up all your important files beforehand so you can still recover and use them afterwards. Then you can factory reset your iPhone XS Max through Settings-> General-> Reset menu, and then choose the option to Erase all content and settings. When asked to enter your device passcode, enter the correct information to continue then tap the option to confirm that you want to erase your iPhone and restore its factory default settings.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to manually erase your iPhone XS Max and restore factory defaults on a Windows or Mac computer.
