How to fix an iPhone that won’t download or update apps after iOS 13

Your iPhone, as long as it’s properly set up, should be able to launch the App Store, connect to Apple servers and download or update apps. However, it seems like some owners encountered a problem after updating their devices to iOS 13. Some said they could no longer download applications from the App Store while others reported they could not update apps on their device for some reason.

Troubleshooting an iPhone won’t download or update apps after iOS 13

This problem can be just a minor issue with the firmware or it could be a sign of a serious issue with the firmware. But our experience would tell us that this can be fixed without you going to the Apple Store. With that said, here are the things you need to do…

First solution: Close the App Store and then restart your iPhone

The very first thing you have to do if you have a problem like this is to see if closing the App Store and rebooting your iPhone would fix the problem. If this is just a glitch in either the app or the firmware, then this procedure should be able to fix it. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Swipe from the bottom of the screen and pause at the middle to show app previews.
  2. Swipe up on the App Store’s preview to close it.
  3. Now, press any of the volume buttons together with the Power key, and hold both keys until the slider appears.
  4. Drag the slider to the right to turn off your iPhone.
  5. Wait a few seconds and the press and hold the Power key until the Apple logo shows on the screen.
  6. Allow your iPhone to reboot properly.

After this, launch the App Store and try to download an app and see if it’s successful. If still not, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Make sure your iPhone has a stable connection

You won’t be able to use the App Store if your iPhone does not have a WiFi connection. However, if you are connected to a network with pretty slow connection, you may still be able to use the App Store but downloading an app could be a pain. What you should do in this step is to make sure you have a stable connection.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Touch WiFi and then try to see if your iPhone is connected to the correct network.
  3. Better yet, disable WiFi for a few seconds and re-enable it to refresh the connection.

After making sure you’re connected to your network and has a stable connection, then try to see if your iPhone still won’t download apps.

Third solution: Reset all the settings on your iPhone

After the first two procedures and your iPhone still won’t download or update apps, then it’s time to bring your iPhone back to its default settings or configuration. You can do so by resetting all settings. This procedure has been proven effective against all minor firmware-related issues including this one and it’s safe as you won’t have to lose your files or data with it. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Touch Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot after this, once it has finished rebooting, try to see if it still won’t download applications from the App Store.

Fourth solution: Factory reset your iPhone

At this point, a reset will be necessary. Since the problem started only after the iOS 13 update, you can always expect it to be just a firmware issue. Needless to say, a reset will be able to fix it as long as the firmware has been successfully and properly installed. However, before you reset your iPhone, make sure to create a backup of your important files and data as they will all be deleted. After the backup, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed with the reset.

After the reset, set up your iPhone as a new device. I hope that we’ve been able to help you fix your iPhone that won’t download apps from the App Store after iOS 13.
