Wondering why your iPhone XS has no sound even if it’s not muted? If you are, then this post is for you. Read on to learn how to fix your iPhone XS audio system that is not working, as depicted by no sound symptom.
Why does your iPhone XS unable to emit sound?
An iPhone that has no sound could either be experiencing random audio glitches or hardware damage. In most cases, no sound problems in iPhones are attributed to hardware damage from a previous incident of accidental dropping or liquid exposure. This symptom however can also be inflicted by software-related factors including bad updates, misconfigured settings, and in-app glitches. Before rushing to a service center, performing some workarounds that will eliminate software-related factors is recommended. If you need some inputs, I’ve mapped out some of the most effective solutions for you to try on. Feel free to try these methods to fix the same problem on the same iOS device.
Before troubleshooting, before to check and do the following:
- Check and make sure that your iPhone isn’t muted. Start working on the very obvious and that is the ringer switch on the side of your phone. Many people would overlooked on this very important control when dealing with no sound issues but only to find out that their phone is set to mute.
- Adjust volume level by pressing on the physical volume controls. If it’s not completely muted, the phone’s volume level might have been set to the a lower level. Low enough that sound outputs are barely heard. To rule this out, press the Volume Up control on the side of your phone to increase the volume level and make your phone sound louder.
- Open different audio-enabled apps for further testing. To determine whether or not it’s an isolated problem with a certain app, open and try using different audio-enabled applications and see which of them is working or not. If the no sound symptom occurs to only one app, then that’s an isolated problem with that application. There may be some in-app settings that you need to configure to enable sound outputs for that app.
Once you’ve done all these and yet your iPhone still has no sound, then try performing the following procedures to rule out software-related factors from the underlying cause.
Don’t forget to test your device after applying each method to find out whether or not the problem is solved.
First solution: Toggle ringer switch off and on.
Minor audio glitches that are attributed to firmware crashes are often rectified by turning the phone’s audio system off and on shortly. If you haven’t do this yet, then here’s what you should do first:
- On the upper-left side of your phone is the ringer switch, which can be flipped up and down. Locate that switch, to get started.
- If the switch is positioned on the upper-side, it means that the phone is in ring mode and so its sound or audio functions are enabled. But since your iPhone has no sound, flip the switch down to set the phone to mute and to disable its sound functions.
- After a few seconds, flip the switch back up to re-enable the phone’s audio functions.
If you see the orange colored-bar on the ringer switch, it means that the phone is set to silent mode and therefore it’s muted. In that case, you will need to flip the switch up to set it back to ring mode.
After flipping the ringer switch back and forth, reboot your iPhone to refresh its audio system. Then try loading up sound-enabled apps to test your phone and see the problem is solved. Proceed to the next possible solution, if it’s still has no sound.
Second solution: Forget Bluetooth connections.
If Bluetooth connections are enabled on your iPhone XS, then it is possible that your phone’s sound outputs are bypassed or routed to a Bluetooth-enabled device. To make sure that this isn’t the underlying cause of the problem, disconnect your iPhone from any paired Bluetooth devices. There are many ways to get this done.
- First, you can turn off Bluetooth straight from your iPhone Settings. To do so, just head over to Settings-> Bluetooth, and then toggle the switch to turn OFF Bluetooth.
Another way is to enable Airplane Mode on your phone. This is done by heading to your phone Settings-> Airplane Mode menu and then toggle the Airplane Mode to turn ON. You can also access and manage Airplane Mode settings through the Control Center. Just launch the Control Center then tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn the feature off or on.
When Airplane Mode is enabled, the phone’s wireless radios including Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth connections are automatically turned off. However, you won’t be to connect to the Internet with this setup. As resolution, forgetting all Bluetooth devices that were paired with your iPhone would be a better option. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap Settings from your Home screen.
- Tap Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on so you can view all Bluetooth-enabled devices or accessories that were paired with your iPhone.
- Next, tap the information “i” icon next to the name of each Bluetooth device.
- Then tap the option to Forget This Device.
- Tap Forget again to confirm.
Follow the same steps to delete or forget all saved Bluetooth devices from your phone.
After deleting all saved Bluetooth devices, reboot your iPhone and then try opening sound-enabled apps to test and see if the problem is fixed.
Third solution: Turn off Do Not Disturb feature on your phone.
If Do Not Disturb is enabled on your phone, notification sounds are muted. Notifications affected are incoming call alerts, new messages, and apps notifications. Alarms however aren’t affected and therefore should sound during the date and time it was set to activate. To eliminate this from the possible causes, just disable Do Not Disturb completely on your phone. For starters, here’s how it’s done:
- Open the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
- From the Control Center, look for the icon that looks like a crescent moon. That’s what the Do Not Disturb icon looks like.
- Simply tap on that icon to disable the feature.
Alternatively, you can access the Do Not Disturb settings the typical way. Here’s how:
- From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
- Then toggle the switch next to Do Not Disturb to turn the feature OFF.
All incoming calls and notifications are silenced if Do Not Disturb is enabled on your phone unless you’ve set some exceptions.
If your iPhone’s sound functions are restored after turning off Do Not Disturb, then you’ve identified the root cause. In that case, you may still opt to enable Do Not Disturb but you need to adjust some settings or set exceptions to allow important sound alerts or notifications.
Fourth solution: Install all pending updates on your phone.
Updates not only bring new features but also embed some critical patches that are programmed to fix existing issues, particularly those that are triggered and sustained by some tough bugs as well as complex iOS errors. There are different types of updates you can implement on your device including updates for your apps and updates to iOS. To ensure apps optimization and performance stability, installing both updates on your phone is recommended.
- Tap to open the App Store.
- From the App Store main screen, scroll down to the bottom and then tap on the Updates icon. A list of apps with pending updates will then show up.
- Tap Update next to the name of the app to update individual applications.
- Or, tap the Update All button on the upper-right side of the screen to update all apps at once.
Wait until all apps are finished updating and then restart/soft reset your iPhone XS to apply the recent apps changes and to refresh apps memory.
Aside from pending app updates, installing the latest iOS update available for your iPhone XS is also recommended. New iOS updates are usually released to offer new features and security patches to get rid of existing device issues that are inflicted by system bugs and malwares. The latest iOS version available for iPhone XS to date, is iOS version 12.2. If you haven’t updated your phone yet, then you may have to consider updating now.
- To do this, go to Settings-> General-> Software Update menu on your phone.
If the new iOS version is available, an update notification will appear. If that happens, read and review the update details and then follow the given instructions to download and install the update on your phone.
Wait until the phone is finished installing the new update. As soon as it’s done updating, give it another reboot to ensure that all new system changes are properly implemented. Rebooting also helps refresh apps that have gone rogue or went corrupted after the recent update implementation.
Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.
Settings that are not properly configured can also cause similar symptoms to occur on your phone. If the problem started after customizing your iPhone settings or installing new updates, then you may have to consider deleting all customized options and then restore the default values. To make this happen, you can use the iOS command to reset all settings. Here’s how it’s done:
- From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
- Select General.
- Tap on Reset.
- Select the option to Reset all settings.
- If prompted, enter your four-digit passcode to proceed.
- Then tap Reset settings when asked to confirm.
Wait for your phone to finish resetting and reboots automatically when done. After it boots up, all customized settings are deleted and the default values and options are restored. To use features that are disabled or turned off by default, you will need to enable them again individually.
Sixth solution: Erase and restore factory default settings on your iPhone XS.
Persistent issues including no sound symptoms are usually due to complex system errors. If you’ve had exhausted all possible methods but to no avail, then this is when you consider resorting to a full system reset. This means erasing your iPhone and then restoring its factory default settings. But before you do, be sure to back up all your important files so you’d still be able to recover them later when needed. You can back up your iPhone XS data to iCloud or to iTunes. Once you’re done creating backups, follow these steps to factory reset your iPhone XS:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen to get started.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
- Select the option to Erase all content and settings. This will delete all your saved information including downloaded apps and personal information.
- If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
- Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.
When the reset is finished, your phone restarts automatically and then loads its factory default settings. To use your phone again, you will need to set it up as new. Just follow the setup wizard to complete the entire process.
Alternatively, you can use iTunes to manually reset and restore factory settings on your iPhone XS. Consider this method if you prefer to back up your files to a computer drive instead of iTunes. To get started, you will need to secure a compatible computer (Windows or Mac) that has the latest version of iTunes app in it. Once you’ve got the equipment ready, connect your iOS device using the Apple-supplied USB cable or Lightning cable to the computer’s USB port. Then open iTunes and wait for it to sync with your iPhone. When they’re connected, select your iPhone in iTunes then follow the onscreen commands to instigate factory reset.
Wait until the reset is finish then reboot your iPhone to clear its memory cache and to refresh the system. After restarting you can set up your iPhone XS as new or restore from a previous iOS backup.
Still doesn’t hear any sound from your iPhone XS?
If you’ve already exhausted all prior methods but your iPhone XS audio is still not working or you hear no sound coming out from your device for notifications, incoming calls, and other audio-related functions, then you should take your device to the nearest Apple-authorized service center already. There might be some sort of physical or liquid damage that has ruined the phone’s audio components and thereby yielded to a no sound issue on your phone. Should that be the case, your device needs some hardware fixing.
