How to fix an Apple iPhone XS that doesn’t make any sound or no audio outputs?

Most sound problems affecting iOS devices are software-related except for those that instigated after instances of dropping or liquid exposure. Among the possible triggers would include but not limited to incorrect settings, software bugs, and faulty updates. Thankfully, these problems can be addressed by end-user remedies thus paying extra for service won’t be necessary.

To give you some inputs on how to deal with such problems on your new iPhone XS, I’ve outlined some helpful workarounds below. Read on to find out what to do if suddenly, your iPhone XS doesn’t make any sound or you hear no audio coming out from its built-in speaker.

Troubleshooting iPhone XS that doesn’t make any sound

Before you begin to troubleshoot software errors that may have affected your iPhone XS sound functions, check and ensure that your speaker works. To do so, navigate to Settings-> Sounds & Haptics menu, then drag the Ringer and Alerts slider up or down several times. Test to see if your iPhone makes sound after adjusting the slider. If you don’t hear any sound, then your iPhone speaker might be damaged and therefore needs service. But if you hear sound after adjusting the slider, your iPhone speaker is fine. In this case, you can use any of the following methods to troubleshoot software problems affecting your iPhone’s audio functions.

First solution: Toggle the Ring/Silent switch on and off.

This is by far the simplest and most obvious solution. If you can hear your iPhone sound through your heads, it may be just put in silent mode. In that case, all you have to do is flip the switch to put your iPhone in ring mode. The Ring/Silent switch is located on the left side of your iPhone.

  • Check and ensure that the switch is positioned to Ring mode, to let alerts and sounds play through your iPhone speakers. If the switch is already set to ring mode and yet your iPhone still has no sound, toggle the switch to Silent mode then back to Ring mode again.

After toggling the ring/silent mode switch, open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of your iPhone screen. Then adjust to increase the volume level on the control center. After adjust the volume level, close the Control Center by tapping the screen and then open an app that has music or sound effects and use it to test your iPhone sound or audio outputs.

Second solution: Turn Bluetooth off or remove Bluetooth pairing on your iPhone XS.

You won’t hear any sound from your iPhone speaker if it’s currently paired with or connected to an audio Bluetooth accessory. To rule this out, remove Bluetooth pairing or simply disable your iPhone’s Bluetooth function.

  • To do so, navigate to Settings-> Bluetooth menu, then tap the switch to turn Bluetooth off.

After turning Bluetooth off, restart or perform a soft reset on your iPhone to dump cache and clear out errant files that may have caused audio conflicts.

You can also turn off Bluetooth connections by enabling Airplane Mode on your iPhone XS. It’s also considered among the unorthodox solutions to random network issues in various smartphones including iPhones.

  • To turn Airplane mode on or off, go to Settings-> Airplane Mode menu of your iPhone and then tap the switch to turn the feature on. Reboot your iPhone XS then use an app to test your iPhone’s sound functions.

If you hear your iPhone sound with Airplane mode enabled, your device may have been paired with a Bluetooth audio device. In that case, turn off Airplane mode then unpair or forget Bluetooth connections on your iPhone XS.

Third solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone Xs.

Sound/audio problems can also be directly attributed to incorrect settings on your device. If your iPhone only started to lose sound or audio after customizing settings or options, then that’s likely the problem. To rule this out, reset all settings on your iPhone XS and void out any invalid customizations. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select Reset all settings option. This will erase customized settings and restores the default or original values without affecting your iPhone data.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

Reboot your iPhone after the reset then test audio functions. If you’re able to hear notification sounds or alerts from other apps except for one, then try to adjust the settings for that app.

  • To do so, navigate to Settings-> Notifications and then tap the app that has no sound. On the following screen, check and ensure that the Allow Notifications and Sounds options are turned on for that app.

Another thing to check or configure is the DND feature or Do Not Disturb feature. When your iPhone is in DND mode, all notifications, calls, and messages will be muted, so you won’t hear any sound for incoming calls, SMS messages, and other notification alerts.

  • To make sure this isn’t the root cause of the problem, go to Settings-> Do Not Disturb, and make sure DND mode is turned OFF.

An indication that your iPhone is currently DND mode is the crescent moon icon on the notification panel on the top of your iPhone screen. So make sure you don’t see that icon there.

Fourth solution: Update your iPhone software to the latest version available.

Software updates may have the required fix patch to eliminate software bugs that may have affected the iPhone’s audio functions and caused sound problems from audio distortion to no sound at all.

  • To check for new iOS update on your iPhone Xs, go to Settings-> General-> Software Update menu.

If you see an update notification, back up all critical information from your iPhone then follow the onscreen instructions to instigate iOS download and installation process.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone Xs to its factory default settings

You may have to consider resorting to a master reset or restore your iPhone XS to its factory default settings if the problem persists after applying all prior methods. You may be dealing with some complex errors that are only rectifiable by full system reset. But before you do so, back up all your critical data to iCloud or iTunes as they will also be deleted in the process. A faster way to perform a master reset is through your iPhone Settings. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select Erase all content and settings option.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

Allow your iPhone to finish resetting and then restores the factory defaults. After the reset, it will reboot by itself and then loads the default settings configuration. By then you can start setting it up as new. Software-related issues should be all cleared after a master reset thus, you should now be able to hear your iPhone sound. If not, then you’re most likely dealing with a hardware issue.

If your iPhone XS still doesn’t make any sound…

You can take your device to the nearest Apple-authorized service center for hardware assessment. Just let the iPhone technician know of what you’ve done so far when ruling out software issues. That way, he can go straight to the next applicable solutions prior to hardware fixing. For other options and official suggestions, contact your device carrier or Apple Support instead.
