Troubleshooting Galaxy A20 with ‘Gmail keeps stopping’ error

In troubleshooting an issue that involves a pre-installed app, you have to be very thorough as you may lose some of your files and data without fixing the issue. With that said, here are the things that you need to do to get rid of ‘Gmail keeps stopping’ error…

First solution: Perform the Forced Restart on your phone

If this is the first time that you encountered this problem, the first thing that you have to do is to force restart your phone to refresh its memory and reload all its apps and services. You should be able to fix it with this method as long as the problem is minor. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A20 logo shows on the screen.

Once the phone has successfully rebooted, open the app to see if the ‘Gmail keeps stopping’ error still shows up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Clear the cache and data of Gmail app

If the problem isn’t due to a minor firmware issue, it can be just with the app. Therefore, the next thing that you have to do is to reset Gmail. A reset means to clear its cache and data and if this is just a minor problem with the app, you should be able to fix it with this method. Don’t worry, none of your emails will be deleted and you should still be able to access them through webmail.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Gmail.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.
  7. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.

After this, try to open the app. If the issue is fixed, then you should be able to access your emails without having to re-login. If not, then the error ‘Gmail keeps stopping’ should be the one to greet you.

Third solution: Delete the old system cache

It is very much possible that the cause of this problem is a corrupt system cache. To rule this out, you need to run your phone in recovery mode and wipe cache partition from there. It deletes the old system cache and replaces it with a new one. This how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A20 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A20 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once your phone has successfully rebooted, try to see if the ‘Gmail keeps stopping’ error still pops up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

As I said earlier, the Gmail app is deeply embedded in the firmware. If the problem continues to bug you even after doing all the previous procedures, then you need to reset your phone. A reset will be able to fix any app issues, however, before you actually reset your device, make sure to create a copy of  your important files and data because you may not be able to retrieve them if they’re deleted during the reset.

After the backup, remove your google and samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. If everything is ready, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
