Troubleshooting iPhone XR that’s not responding after the latest iOS update

Before troubleshooting, check your iPhone’s storage status and see if there’s still a lot of space available. Updates usually come in big file sizes so they tend to use up more storage space from your device. If your iPhone is already running low on storage before the update was installed, then it is very likely that the memory has been totally consumed afterwards. As a result, performance symptoms instigate on your device.

To check and manage your iPhone storage, go to Settings-> General-> iPhone storage menu and then see how much is the available storage space. If the remaining storage is less than a gigabyte, then that’s likely the problem that you should fix. In this case, you need to free up some space by deleting old and unwanted contents. Or you can move some of your important files to other storage media or back them up to iCloud.

If your iPhone still has ample of storage and yet it’s responding properly, then try performing these solutions to rule out other software-related triggers.

First solution: Force restart your iPhone XR.

The importance of regularly updating the operating system of your iPhones is enormous but having a flawless updating experience isn’t always a guarantee. Good thing there are some quick fixes that you can resort to if something goes wrong after updating your iOS device. And the quickest possible way to fix such issue is to perform a forced restart on your iPhone XR. This method provides the same output as that of a soft reset but is performed using your phone’s physical buttons. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Lastly, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Similar to a soft reset, performing the forced restart does not cause data loss, so there’s no need to create backups beforehand. If the screen is responding properly again after carrying out a forced restart, perform the next solutions to eliminate other factors that may cause your device to become unresponsive again in the future.

Second solution: Reset network settings on your iPhone XR.

Network-related glitches can also be the main cause of your screen becoming unresponsive after an iOS update. This is usually the case if your iPhone suddenly stops responding when trying to load some online resources or web-based services. And hence, clearing out the current network settings such as saved Bluetooth and cellular connections along with their corresponding passwords, VPNs and other network settings will likely help you fix the problem. If your iPhone managed to boot up and respond properly after performing a forced restart, then you may carry out a network settings reset with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap Reset.
  4. Then select Reset network settings option.
  5. When asked, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset network settings option again to confirm the reset.

Your iPhone will reboot automatically after the network reset. As soon as it boots up, proceed to enable all necessary features that you would want to use on your device including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. You also need to set up your Wi-Fi network again as the login credentials were deleted after the reset.

Third solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR.

Some software glitches can be provoked after updating iOS especially if you have previously customized your phone’s settings. This is because the iOS update might have overridden the system settings and caused conflicts that have triggered the device to act up. In this case, restoring your device settings to their default values might as well clear out these transpiring errors. So here’s what you should try doing next:

  1. Go to Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings option.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm all settings reset.

Again, this method can only be carried out if your iPhone managed to boot up from a forced restart. Your phone will also reboot by itself after the reset. Since the settings had been restored to its factory default, proceed to enable all the features that you want to use again.

Fourth solution: Install pending app updates on your iPhone.

If you’ve got apps that are obsolete or out of date, these apps might have turned to be the main culprits as they are more prone to becoming rogue after an iOS update. Apps that aren’t up-to-date may no longer be able to run properly because they’re no longer meet the minimum system requirements to work with your iPhone. This is when installing all pending app updates on your iPhone can help. In the event when your device is not set to auto-update, follow these subsequent steps to manually check for and install pending updates for your apps:

  1. Launch the App Store and then scroll down to the Updates section.
  2. Check the list of apps with pending updates and tap the Update button next to the app’s name to individually install the update.
  3. Otherwise, tap the Update All button to simultaneously install all pending apps updates.

Note that an excellent and stable Wi-Fi internet connection, ample battery life and sufficient memory space are needed to perform the app updating process. Once the installation for the app updates has been completed, refresh the operating system of your iPhone by performing a soft reset.

Fifth solution: Restore your iPhone XS to its factory default settings via iTunes.

This method is also worth a shot if the screen problem still persists after exhausting the given solutions above. The computer that you will be using to execute this process should have an operating system that is compatible with your iPhone XR. It also needs to have the latest version of iTunes software and an Internet connection for iTunes to sync with the Apple server and download the latest software for your iOS device. But before performing a master reset, make sure that you create a back-up of all important files saved on your phone because these will be erased in the process. Once you’re all set, follow these steps to erase your iPhone and restore its factory defaults through iTunes:

  1. On your computer, launch iTunes.
  2. Then connect your iPhone XR to the computer using the provided USB cable or Lightning cable.
  3. Select Trust This Computer if prompted or key in your device passcode. Then follow the onscreen prompts to continue.
  4. Select the name of your iPhone when it shows up in iTunes.
  5. Search through the Summary section then click the Restore [iPhone] button.
  6. Then click on the Restore button to confirm.

Wait for iTunes to initiate the factory/master reset. Once the process is done, everything saved on your phone’s internal memory has been wiped out and the latest software available has also been installed.

Sixth solution: Perform an iOS restore in recovery mode via iTunes.

If complex system issues could not be cleared out by restoring your iPhone to its factory default settings, then a recovery mode restore can be considered among the next possible solutions to try on. Doing so will put your iPhone in a recovery state, allowing iTunes to correct major errors and repair iOS. It is also recommended to create a back-up for your phone to safeguard all the important files saved on its memory. To get started, connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes. Then perform a force restart while your iPhone is connected to the computer. Here’s how:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Then press and hold the Side/Power button.
  4. Continue holding the button when the Apple logo appears and then release once the Recovery Mode screen (Connect to iTunes screen) appears.
  5. You will then be prompted with options to Update or Restore your iPhone. Select Update if you want iTunes to reinstall iOS without deleting your data. Otherwise, select the Restore iOS option.

iTunes will then start to initiate the command and begin to download the software for your iPhone. Make sure not disconnect your phone from the computer if there is no confirmation showing that the process has already been completed. Otherwise, you’ll need to start over with the process.

Is your iPhone XR still not responding after the iOS update?

It is very unlikely for a device to end up in the same unresponsive state after applying the above solutions. But if this happens to your iPhone XR, your next option is to seek more help from an iPhone technician. While the symptom instigated from the update, it’s still possible that your device has obtained physical or liquid damage from prior incidents of dropping or liquid exposure. And the symptom has just (coincidentally) occurred after installing the latest update. To rule this out, take your iPhone to the nearest Apple Genius bar in your place so that it can be thoroughly scrutinized by an authorized technician.
