First solution: Force restart your iPhone XR.

A force restart should be executed when your phone’s screen is no longer responding to touches. This process also provides the same output as with soft reset, which eliminates minor software glitches and cache files from corrupted apps that trigger your phone to be stuck on black screen of death after an iOS update.

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Post-update bugs should also be eliminated after the reset, refreshing your phone’s operating system. Once your iPhone XR is completely back on, navigate your phone and check if everything is working fine. Check your apps as well to make sure that neither of the apps is affected with the recently installed iOS.

Second solution: Charge your iPhone XR for at least 30 minutes.

If your iPhone has an empty battery, it will definitely not turn on and won’t show anything but a black screen. This can possibly happen if there are multiple running apps in the background which can rapidly drain your battery. Being said, it is recommended to charge your phone for at least 30 minutes to have enough battery to power up. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Connect your iPhone XR to its supplied or built-in charger.
  2. Plug the charger into the wall/power outlet.
  3. A battery icon will show on the screen indicating that your iPhone is charging. Leave your phone charging for at least 30 minutes.
  4. After the said time and while your phone is still charging, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Wait until your iPhone XR completely boots up and check if everything works fine. However, if your phone is still stuck on black screen of death, you might be dealing with major system errors which need complex solution.

Third solution: Restore your iPhone XR in recovery mode via iTunes.

Among the advanced solutions in dealing with major software glitches that trigger your iPhone XR to get stuck on black screen of death is by restoring the iOS through iTunes. This option will also require you a Windows or Mac computer that runs with the latest operating system compatible with the firmware of your iPhone XR, and with the latest iTunes version installed on it. Once the requisites are met, connect your iPhone XR to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable. Once iTunes recognizes your phone, follow the onscreen instructions to back-up your saved files for you to be able to recover them afterwards. After you have successfully backed up your files, follow these steps to put your iPhone to recovery mode and restore iOS using iTunes:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. When Connect to iTunes command appears, press and hold the Side/Power button. Continue pressing and holding the button when the Apple logo appear to put your iPhone in a recovery mode state.
  4. Once you’ve entered the recovery mode state, Update or Restore options will appear.
  5. To update your iOS, select the Update option. If you wish to reinstall and download the iOS without wiping your data, select Restore option.

Don’t do anything nor disconnect your phone from the computer as this might interfere the process. Thus, wait until it shows a confirmation that the process has already been completed.

Fourth solution: Restore your iPhone XR in DFU mode via iTunes.

A DFU restore (Device Firmware Upgrade) can be necessary if your phone is still stuck on black screen of death after performing a recovery mode restore. The problem will most likely to persist if the operating system of your phone is totally corrupted. Prior to performing this trick, make sure that your iPhone XR has not been exposed to physical or liquid damage. Or else, you would need to visit your nearest local office or service center to receive proper assistance.

If you wish to try this last resort, follow the steps to do a DFU restore on your iPhone XR:

  1. Connect your iPhone XR to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable.
  2. Then press and hold the Side/Power button for about 3 seconds.
  3. While still pressing the Side/Power button, press and hold the Volume Down button for at least 10 seconds. Do not press and hold the buttons too long so that the Apple logo will not appear. Otherwise, you’ll need to do the steps again.
  4. If the Apple logo didn’t appear, release the Side/Power button but continue to hold the Volume Down button for another 5 seconds.
  5. You’ll know that you have successfully entered DFU state when the screen remains black or does not show anything. Then check on your computer screen and wait until a message “iTunes has detected your iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes” appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

Once you have successfully restored your iPhone XR, force restart your iPhone XR to exit from DFU state and return to its normal mode. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set-up your iPhone XR as new again.
